Very Catholic thing (but not exclusively). It’s the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent. Lent is the period of self-sacrifice and of giving up on pleasures, so Fat Tuesday is the last day for excess and feasting, hence its name, which translates into French as Mardi Gras. The biggest Mardi Gras festival in New Orleans happens for the three days leading up to Ash Wednesday, but culminates on Fat Tuesday. It’s also known as Shrove Tuesday.

Also, I have no idea about todays Connections and, based on @murfle’s perfect score, am wondering how American I need to be to figure it out.

While there are things like NHL teams in previous ones that I wouldn’t expect you guys to get, today’s is pretty universal, I’d say… I think most people would understand the words in context…

But hey, I couldn’t get a lot of the words on both today’s mini crosswords.
