Coronavirus - COVID-19

We have figured out where the people in the office next door got exposed.
Their gym /. . .

A third out of 8 people is now positive - 2 weeks almost later after the first one got sick.

The three that got sick are all part of the same gym and even though they haven’t been back yet it is the only other place/persons they have in common

My dad has had a few people in his offices that have contracted the virus, and today there was one person confirmed to have died as a result. Now he says to me he’s feeling symptomatic…

Our marketing manager here from Gordon’s Bay area has tested positive and has terrible symptoms. He went to hospital and they declined to admit him, due to the hospital being too full of COVID cases already. The response was that you should quite literally be on your death bed before they decide to admit you to hospital during this “second wave”.

We’ve decided to put our little going away holiday on hold for a couple of months and rather stay at home between Christmas and New Years. The risk of exposing ourselves to the virus is too high and we’ve been through this terrible RSV now for 2 months as well.

I hope your dad feels better soon, @Beo! That is terrible news about his coworker. I hope that whatever your dad has is mild.

@FarligOpptreden: That is hectic news. Thanks for sharing it. I hope your coworker feels better soon. It makes me angry to hear the hospitals are full to the brim, but Western Cape politicians are fighting to reopen the Garden Route beaches. What about all those field hospitals the Western Cape government keeps talking about?

Just heard on the radio this morning that there is a new strain/string of the virus that has a higher infection rate, albeit, no more severe or dangerous.

Yes, I’ve been following some conversations of health care workers and researchers on Twitter.

The new variant (not a strain, per se) is potentially more dangerous in the sense that it apparently hits younger people harder and causes severe symptoms even in people without comorbidities.

This whole thread was informative:

Thank you, very informative indeed.

Baie Dankie! This is how it was explained to me as well, just not as good, this makes sense, and it has managed to reduce my stress.

What covid test is now being done by a finger prick? My sister in law got that last week since she came down with the flu (She tested negative according to this test = results was in 20mins)

That test is an antibody test, not a current covid test. Unless something has changed in the last week.

Excuse my ignorance, but looking on Google I see this.

Am I right to assume that is the amount of infections recorded daily? (An increase in 9445 cases in one day)

Or is this a cumulative amount that either grows or shrinks on a daily basis?

That’s right, active cases are in the order of 100K at the moment.

Couple more granular graphs here:

South Africa Coronavirus: 921,922 Cases and 24,691 Deaths - Worldometer (worldometers.info)

Second one shows Cases per Day, with 3- and 7-day moving averages, and a little further down, Daily Deaths, which I think are fairly insightful:

Both are heading towards our July-August highs sadly. We’ll hit 1-million total cases by (or close to) year end I think.

What are we looking at here? What are all those people queuing for? Shopping centre?

At first I thought the taxi would do ‘something’ but thats a really long ass queue? Are they waiting to get covid tests? I ran past the clinic here today and they have signs for covid testing but they point to a gate thats always been locked before, kinda like a backdoor. The parking lot was very full, no queues outside though.

I’m a little biased, but I really like the clarity he brings to the data.

Ok so I lost my shit today. My sister in law has been telling us all she is dying, she is so very sick.

Now I at first believed her, since I know a lot of people who got really badly ill.

She managed to convince herself she is dying last night. She was so convinced, she refused to sleep until my youngest brother drugged her.

Today again, convinced she is dying, she cant breath and she is a bit dizzy and light headed.

The part I didn’t get properly until today is her one “friend” is a doctor - fuck only knows what kind, just know once I know who he is he will get an earful from me.

He was the one telling her she is sicker than she was, he managed to get her anxiety so high that she couldn’t see the truth. He told her today that she sounds breathless, and if she cant breathe properly she needs to go to the hospital. MY brother stopped her. The hospital staff would have fucking laughed them out of the parking lot.

She insisted on me bringing her a pulse ox so that she can check her oxygen levels. so I work till 7, get to the pharmacy pay R1000 for the pulse ox, take it to her. I placed the parcel outside their front door, got back into my car with windows closed and mask up.

She opened the door grabbed the bag and I went to stand 2 m outside their front window and made her take her oxygen level right then…99%

And then I kakked her out. I told her if she speaks to this friend again I will physically klap her so hard she wont know her own name.

The penny has dropped, she immediately started relaxing, my brother is standing far from her shouting at me to go and tell her off!

Now the part that really got me was I was expecting someone in bed, that I couldn’t see her, that she is so ill she cant walk. This girl was talking and laughing and giggling afterwards.

I told her to start eating, even if its just a smoothie, I told her to take a bath and relax and get sleep.

My issue out of all of this was the fact that she kept listening to the one person who made it worse for her. I am so pissed at this doctor I can scream (I did scream I have a sore throat from yelling - at no one in the car as I was driving home)

Sounds to me like a medical student. They have a tendency to think everything is the worst case scenario based on what they learned about a week earlier.
