Facebook stored millions of passwords in plain text

Facebook once again broke our trust by storing millions of people's passwords in plain text within the company, which they discovered in January 2019 already but only revealed to us now.

So glad I close my Facebook account when they updated their t&c to make what ever you upload they own and can use how ever they want to.

It’s not that difficult to encrypt/hash a password. Surely they can’t be that lazy?

It probably stems from the early days when they just built some prototype to get certain MVP features running. As with pretty much all systems, the MVP ended up running in production for waaaay longer than planned, accruing unnecessary technical debt. Like clear-text passwords.
