Oh but it is. The game is just a rocket launcher. Occasionally you might do something daring like switch to the rail gun.
Otherwise you’re just shooting the RL at the floor or walls.

I want to weigh in here ![]()
Quake 1 - easily compares to UT. They are very different, but both are great for what they offer.
Quake 2 is just way WAY too slow. Never enjoyed it. Dont think I ever finished it.
Quake 3 and UT are probably the most comparable. Quick, varied weapons and maps, excellent! It is MUCH harder to call a winner here!
No, there is no Quake 4, I dont care what you try and tell me…
Finally, of all of these, Quake 1, due to its art style and the current IronWail modding scene, has aged the best of ALL of them! ![]()
Thank you for your attention to this matter…
Where’s your weight for UT, you have none!
UT set the foundation for arena shooters and still reigns as the best and supreme, the grand-daddy of shooters.
Odd, I only really ever used a rocket launcher specifically for rocket jumping, or if I didn’t have a super shotgun or railgun…
Relevant to this discussion and the thread:
You can freely download Unreal, UT99 and UT2004 as well as community patches here:
so what your saying is… next mewme is UT2004
I’d be down for that!
Nice, even has linux and mac install options on github!
I wonder if I had STEAM when I started playing Quake 1 what my combined play hours would be over the years…actually for Quake 2 and Quake 3 as well (I’m not a fan of Quake 4)
But besides liking the game so much, it taught me a lot too, I learned about FTP sites to download mods, levels, etc from ftp.cdrom.com.
Plus more about networks, how the game communicated. First multiplayer game I joined, “what does a 999 ping mean?” ![]()
We had kind of low spec systems, learned a lot about “tweaking” (not the meth kind) your system to get better performance, also about command line variables for Quake to modify it.
Without a doubt the game that had the most effect on me.
I think you nailed it there!
In a way I’m kind of glad not to track the time I’ve spent on some games! UT2004, Diablo II and Overwatch would probably have the most hours. I would also have a lot of hours on the various Quakes.
yes, true, another game I played a lot was Tribes 2.
My recent addiction is Satisfactory, ~1400 hours (been playing since Early Access) Waiting for the release of 1.2 when I’ll start another play through.
Not too far away, innit?
You gonna do a “Let’s Play” or livestream it?
You know, i was actually gonna mention the OG soundtrack as a plus point for Quake, but got off on a tangent and forgot.
people will be so bored watching me play.
Here is where I completed v1.0
Came here for the Free Games, stayed for the debate, leaving with plans for the next MEWME!
