I R…

Jokes. Many hours of trouble-free gaming!

Did you need any extra cooling at all? Does the CPU come with a cooling fan, and is it any good at stock?

The stock cooler seems a bit weak yeah. I’m getting temps of up to 87 gaming flat out but it seems to hover around 80-84. I’m going to get a Corsair H100i Pro liquid cooling kit sometime in April, depending on when my brother comes to Bloem.

AIO knocks 20°C off the temperature, on an open-air testbench. That said, 87°C doesn’t thermal throttle either.

Still jelly of this

Keep typing out my specs, and then looking at the list, and it looks ridiculous.

Upgraded my CPU to a 6600k.
Now deciding whether SSD next or getting another 8gb ram or going for 16gb ram of the same brand.

Possible next step is new mobo and cpu and making the switch to Ryzen.

Graphics can take a back seat until prices come down

Gigabyte GH H110m s2h mobo
i5 6600k
1050ti graphics card
12gb ddr4 ram

Upgraded my cpu to 5800x3d. Happy with the upgrade.

How big of an upgrade is it compared to the 3700x? And how much more power does it consume? I’m eyeing a similar upgrade…

Game play is smoother for me.

In terms of power consumption the 5800x3d consumes a bit more for multi thread work loads ±46 watts. At idle only 2 watts more and single threaded its even.

I recently went from a 2700X to a 5800X 3D. It’s noticeably better at delivering frames! It does seem to run hotter (by design, I believe), so I do need to check the fan curves on the cooler.

Thread necro time

I finally decided enough is enough and I had to upgrade from my 16 year old 1st gen i7 and GTX 970

Got a good deal on the following bundle:

  • Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 AORUS MASTER AMD AM4 (pre-owned)
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 5700X
  • GPU: Gigabyte AORUS GeForce RTX 3090 XTREME 24G (pre-owned)
  • Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB RS 32gb (2x16gb) 3600mhz
  • Boot Drive: Hikvision G4000 1TB NVMe SSD
  • PSU: GIGABYTE P850GM 850W 80+ Gold Modular (The new revision that does not explode)
  • Case: Raidmax i801 ARGB Tempered Glass Mid Tower

I can finally use my monitor at it’s full potential: Dell S2721DGFA 27" WQHD (2560x1440) 165Hz 1ms IPS AMD FreeSync Premium Pro DisplayHDR 400 Gaming Desktop Monitor

Congrats on the new rig. Very nice! That old i7 setup served you well for a lot longer than most would have managed to get out of it.

The jump up in performance must have been a bit of shock.

Yea, other than switching on all they eye candies, the thing I love the most is the NVMe speeds and load times. It’s now “Lets goooo!!!” instead of “Lets go make coffee while we wait”

Put me in coach

Gigabyte B550i Aorus Pro AX
Thermalright AXP90-X53 on a 5800X3D CPU
2x DIMMS of 16Gb memory, each. I can’t remember which G.Skill sticks I’m using  It’s probably 3600MHz :man_shrugging:
Sapphire RX 7900XTX Pulse
4Tb Mushkin NVMe
2x Phanteks T30 fans ('n paar dik bois)
Corsair SF750

All inside my favourite SFF case: Lian Li A4-H20

The keen eyes among you would have noticed, there’s no H20 in the case… I wanted to avoid an AIO or any chance of pump failure. The AXP90-X53 with it’s 53mm height, makes it a non-issue. CPU, motherboard and GPU temps are nothing to write home about. They are cool enough, that none of these 3 components are particularly hot. NVMe temp is very hot, by NVMe standards. It tops 80℃, during something intense. It still doesn’t throttle, which is peculiar. Probably not bueno, but I don’t care for now. I backup regularly, and if it dies, I’ll replace it with something else. I suspect, it’s just that specific product, that has a very high hot spot, cause it’s the same temp in every slot, and in other PC’s too.

Anyhooo, some nice stuff outside case:
34" LG Ultragear 144Hz IPS
Presonus Monitors
Sennheiser HD 400S
Antlion Audio Modmic wireless
Fifine K669B Mic
Elgato Facecam
Ducky One 3 SF Daybreak with Akko v3 yellows (my e and r keys are ghosting, time to swap for spares)
Glorious Model O2 (this is err… glorious)
Xbox Elite Series 2 controller

All running Fedora Silverblue. Great little pc for development work or gaming. Most games cap out at 144fps, and if they don’t, I drop settings, till they do, with the exception of Helldivers 2 which varies wildly from 144 right down to 25’ish  I have been known to throw mean words around at the devs. They can’t optimise to save a dog’s life. Who doesn’t want to save a dog’s life?

All these parts work with linux, and you won’t find yourself missing functionality. Worked out most of the kinks too, of which, the Xbox controller was by far the most confusing to fix. 2 things left on my bucket list: get Moza sim hardware working on linux, and find a cool functional carry case, that doesn’t like it belongs in an Uwe Bol movie.

Oh dear, wall of text, jammer :bowing_man:

A man of keen tastes. Should’ve just gone for the XFX RX7900 XTX, that’s 66% more X’s for your money.

I’ll update mine as well, seeing as it changed a bit since I last posted in 2021:

Case: Still Corsair 4000D black
Mobo: Still MSI X570-A PRO
CPU: Ryzen 5800X3D this thing claps
RAM: Still 16GB KLEVV CRAS X RGB 3200MHz
GPU: XFX RX 7900 XT wow much X
PSU: A Seasonic 850W mother to power all the X’s
SSD: Still AORUS 2TB Gen4 NVMe

I call this my X-iest build.

Monitor: Still DELL S2716DG 27" WQHD (2560x1440) 144Hz - Love this thing. I’ll only upgrade in a couple of years when 4K@144Hz is realistically attainable.
Keyboard: Treated myself, and upgraded to an Asus ROG Strix FlareII with quiet Red switches. @aldyr will probably fight me on this, but it’s one of the most pleasant typing experiences I’ve ever had.
Mouse: Corsair Katar Pro found on the Incredible Connection discount/open box pile. It’s fine. It’s starting to go, and I’ll definitely upgrade to something proper when it finally throws in the towel. My keyboard splurge has shown me what a difference a relatively small jump up in price can make for peripherals I spend some 40 hours a week interacting with.
Headset: Corsair HS70 wireless. I bought a set in 2019, liked it, and so bought my wife a set when she had some regular online meetings in 2020 and 2021. My set died earlier in the year, wife doesn’t use hers anymore, so she graciously gifted it back to me with minimal wear and only slight makeup stains.

+1 to the 5800X3D gang. Recently replaced my 3700X with one and it’s been glorious. Had to upgrade my Wraith Prism cooler with a Scythe Fuma 3 though. It’s huge.
