Finally some good news, I got a call from the installer yesterday afternoon and they will be coming today to diagnose and fix the issue :raised_hands:t2:

I saved the number they called me from so that I’ve got it for future reference.

Not quite solar related (but energy related)… Anyone using a geyser blanket on a class B geyser? Does it make a difference?

The last place I lived installed them in all the houses/flats/guest rooms.

Didn’t seem to make a lick of difference on the electric bill… But that’s a large property with probably 20-30 geysers… YMMV

My interest is more in retaining hot water during the night since I only run the geyser during the day. The new class B geysers already have thick insulation built in which is why I’m doubtful about how much of a difference it would make. However, they say that if the geysers were in the roof instead of outside, that would have made a difference.

Class B Geysers are very insulated already. From a quick google and a bit of excel, it’ll make about 0.3 deg difference over 16 hours. That is obviously assuming no showers or anything like that, but just as a quick comparison. In my opinion, it’s not worth it on a class B.

Just to follow up on the questioning going on in the Tech support thread

Whats easiest way for me to see what my power usage is for battery size calculation? If i monitor my prepaid units in like a standard 3 hour session (im even happy to include things like the kettle being used in that 3 houreven tho wouldnt include them in the change, to give myself a good “worse case” scenario, if that makes sense. I plan to power all but the kitchen plugs - oven, fridges kettle etc, geyser), how do i calculate what my wh usage is? whats the eskom unit to wh ratio?

I know in a typical day I’m between 13-17 units, altho that becomes like 3 units between 7am and like 7pm and like 11 or more the evening peak, so i would wanna measure the 7 to 10pm time to see what max theoretical battery usage would be. If i use say 5 units in a 3 hour period, does that mean i need more than kwh battery? are the units to kwh 1:1 is what im asking in a very convoluted way

Did you expect them to give it for free if you’re vitality blue (or whatever the “good” colour is these days)

Part of the function of a bank is to give loans. Them saying they launched solar and energy finance plans, is like a Valpre saying, they are bottling new bottles of water.

Secured loans have long been called finance plans. I wasn’t expecting anything else when I clicked the link. It wasn’t a service they provided thus far, as far as I know, so it being a headline makes sense. Also, the fact that it’s financing specifically for solar is providing it with interest rates different from most traditional unsecured loans, so I can see a different angle here. Unless they do secure against your home. As a disco bank client, I’ll find out for us. I wish they did give it for free to vitality mauve clients :frowning:

Reviving the thread to ask a naive question…

Received an email from Eskom this morning with a bunch of attachments that I don’t understand. I’m guessing it has something to do with our solar installation, but weirded odd by why were only receiving this now - we’ve had our installation for going on 15 months now.

Subject: NO COST SSEG ( PV Solar ) Budget Quotation

Eskom has decided to register your PV Solar installation with no additional cost

Kindly find attached Zero Amount SSEG Budget Quotation, Electricity Supply Agreement and Standard Conditions of Supply for your attention. Please sign the Zero amount BQ and other documents then send back to me so that I can finalize the SSEG registration .

Attachments:

  • Homeflex Electricity Supply Agreement
  • Standard Conditions of Supply for grid tied Homeflex with Conventional Metering
  • 5W BQ for SSEG Homeflex Residential Pricing Correct 24102024
  • Appendix A Unauthorised SSEGs Acknowledgement Letter

Can anyone explain like I’m five what the heck they want me to sign here?

I remember filling in a bunch of SSEG (small scale energy generation) documents for GoSolr to handle the registration with the municipality. Apparently every municipality handles the whole thing differently, with different tariffs etc. Don’t think it registration has happened yet either, even after 2 years.

Do you receive your electricity bill directly from Eskom?

Thanks. I think you’re 100% correct - it’s a bunch of SSEG registration documents that need to be completed in order to register our installation.

Yip, we’re on Eskom Direct. That it’s taken them this long to ask for them is par for the course I guess.

Well as far as I know, nothing further has happened with our SSEG registration with City Power. And the longer it takes the better, prepaid, even despite the R200 network charge, still works out as the cheaper option.
