Here’s an even better picture. Gasly got a face full of oil, apparently.
(Going to be missing most of the Practice sessions and Qualifying due to work commitments, so feel free to jump in with the usual updates if you want. If not, I’ll get to them, probably just a bit late.)
Free Practice 1
Looks like a semi-fun session for Danny Ric and his flaming Renault. Not! Seb Vettel also brought out a Red Flag that caused the session to end a little early when he spun into the wall at Turn 19. (Coincidentally in exactly the same spot that I spun and ended my Abu Dhabi GP in our F1 2019 League race there. I did it with much more effort and vigour though.)
The Mercs and Red Bulls seem to have the early advantage over the Ferraris, but FP2 will be a little more representative of race conditions, so we’ll see then if they hold onto that advantage.
Free Practice 2
Mid session spin in T19 for Giovanazzi that an almost carbon copy of Vettel’s in FP1. GIO manages to avoid the barrier and any damage though. Unlike Seb. #justsaying
Late session incident when Grosjean turns in while Bottas was trying to overtake on the inside into Turn 11. Damage to both cars, but both are able to recover to the pits. Red Flag to allow marshals to sweep up all the shattered carbon fibre shards. Blame still to be officially apportioned, but initially looks like VB came from way too far back and just assumed ROGRO would see him coming and stay wide. But it’s Grosjean, so no idea what the heck Bottas was thinking would happen.
Bottas holds onto top spot for the second session despite the Grosjean contact with a time set early in the session. Ultimately though, Bottas will be starting from the back of the grid on Sunday as he has taken a new power unit.
Most running focused on race simulation runs as this is the only session that replicates race conditions. Eight sets of teammates finish the session side-by-side.
Missed all of the action yesterday, but for the record (and because I’m a little OCD) and completeness:
Free Practice 3
Qualifying
I see the McLaren qualy battle was closest. They really are a well matched pair. Sainz still has the edge as a racer though.
I think the start of the race with no DRS was the fun part, after that it got boring. I would have prefered the camera on the norris, sainz, hulk and ric battle!
And that’s P6 for Carlos in the driver’s championship! What a season he’s had. Brilliant debut from Lando as well, he could have been much higher than 11th if not for his reliability issues.
Very nice season montage from Ziggo Sport:
This is funny, heartwarming and appropriate, all at once. What a talent this kid is. Big things to come.
He has been such a breath of fresh air this season and has also made a huge impact on people outside of the sport with his personality
this made me lol good end to work day
Is that george russell in a merc?
Think they are all using their future drivers for this testing.
Yep he tested for them - so it will be interesting to see when they steal him to replace bottas
Or when Hamilton goes to Ferrari. I see that’s something that’s been in the news quite a bit the last couple of days.
