The mysterious moving steering wheel from Merc.
What’s going on with Mercedes’ ‘trombone steering’?
Ted Kravitz: "A senior source at Mercedes has confirmed that a) we’re not imagining it, the trombone steering, b) it’s something that’s on the car and not ostensibly something just for testing and c) it’s a steering mode. So, it’s another element of what the steering can do.
“In the way that Mercedes do, and they’re so clever, they thought ‘maybe we can do something like the way the steering changes the ride-height when it’s on full lock’ in different track conditions.”
Garage doors down at Renault…
And that, under the new regulations stating that the shutters have to remain open in most circumstances, isn’t particularly promising for their session at the moment.
The floor of the RS20 will be off for certain at the moment either changing or repairing something.
Daniel Ricciardo is second on the timesheet, but only has 17 laps to his name in the opening two-and-a-half hours.
Weren’t active suspension things banned in the 90s?
yes it was
But currently, it is being argued that it has nothing to do with suspension and all for the steering - so they are not breaking rules
Fair enough then.
I wonder how Codemasters will put this in the new game
I what i gather from it. It might more be done to manage temps on the tires. or at least side effect of that.
first race is going to be interesting
Test Day 2 times:
Kimi so close to getting into the 1:16s near the end of the session today. Mind you, he was on the softest tyre compound and running on fumes at the time. He did cause the first red flag of 2020 Testing just 15 minutes before the scheduled end of the day, which is in itself pretty remarkable. Doubly so because he didn’t stop with a mechanical or technical issue - he simply ran out of fuel
Kimi’s 1:17.0 time topper suggests that the Ferrari power unit can generate some good pace, which in turn suggests that the Scuderia Ferrari lot are perhaps the ones doing a little sandbagging in these opening days of the season. Seb, still showing signs of struggling with a little flu, posted the fastest Ferrari time of the Test so far - a 1:18.154. A full second slower than the Alfa’s time, and barely 3-hundredths faster than the other Ferrari 065 powered car, Haas.
Other than Renault who seem to be the only team with serious mechanical/technical issues at the moment (as @Wyvern mentioned earlier) the reliability we’ve seen from the cars so far has been impressive. The high lap counts tell the same story:
In addition to the generally solid reliability and consistent times many drivers managed in long runs, it was the Mercedes DAS system that had many people’s eyebrows raised and lips flapping. The push-pull motion of the Merc steering wheel seems to allow the driver to alter the toe angle of the front tyres in order to improve tyre management and temperature as they need.
Here’s all the James Allison was prepared to say about it:
Honestly, whether it’s legal or not, protested by the other whiner teams, or accepted and copied by them, this is the sort of thing that I love about the sport. The effort at innovation and pushing the boundaries of what they can do to improve their car beyond it’s already remarkable levels of performance. DAS ist gut!
Savage.
I love Ferrari but we all know its true
Hehehe yes it is
Its difficult to decide - I use the F1TV on my phone I should use it on my tablet and the livetiming app on my phone since the web one doesnt seem to work
I am assuming you have figured this out hey?
Also anyone watching on F1TV - is your sound faster than the image?
Red flag for Seb - The Ferrari lost power and Seb parked the car on the side of the track.
Testing is on hold till that Ferrari is off the track.
