This is hugeā€¦ Wonder if last yearā€™s brake ducts will still fit? I recall seeing something about not having a quick replacement ready.

YOH!
Does Vettel still want to go there now? I wonder what the difference in performance be once they change that. And if itā€™s a big difference, then I suppose most teams will have to focus on perfecting their Brake Ducts, and therefore close the gap on Merc(If itā€™s even as simple as that). Would be interesting to see.

So, this is actually a really interesting case now.

The reason Renault protested the brake ducts specifically, was to test the legitimacy of copying other cars. The brake ducts are components that look roughly similar between different teams, but has a huge number of internal components that you can only ever see if you cut one openā€¦ or have the drawings. Renault was hoping that they could prove that RP had the CAD drawings provided by Merc, and that their car would thus not be legal.

Now that itā€™s been punished, Iā€™m assuming the brake ducts are not legal. But surely now they can attack the other components on the car, one at a time, for each race.

Also, Vettel would definitely still want to go there, I think. The reason RP took the shortcuts, IMO, is so that they could focus on the 2022 cars with the new rules.

Just what I heard now, Merc was allowed to share brake ducts last year, and they did. RP used just the front designs last year and carried them forward this year.

This year you are not allowed to share brake ducts, so you have to either 1. design your own or 2. use the ones from last year.

Because RP did not use the Merc data for the rears last year, yet chose to use that data this year, they are now in violation. Also, this is why Merc is not in trouble.

Short version picked up from commentary elsewhere.

Also, track changes:

  • Chapel now has a longer outside kerb to stop the dust kickups from last week
  • Not 100% sure, but it seems the Torpedo wall now has tyres in front of it

It does, they added 36m of tyre wall. Got to use those old Pirelliā€™sā€¦

The RP verdict is being appealed. Mostly because they can continue to use the banned partsā€¦
