ā€œHamverbotā€ was word of the year for 2020. Looks like itā€™s had a resurgence in 2021 as well :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Iā€™ve been having quite insightful discussions about the red flag rules in YouTube comments of all places (lol) and wanted to know what you guys thought.

Currently everyone is allowed a free pit stop and major damage can be repaired, like what would normally take 20+ seconds in a normal stop.

The red flag repair rule came into effect to allow tire changes according to the weather (i.e. you donā€™t want to do a standing start in the rain on slicks, or vise-versa) but has evolved over time to become a fix-absolutely-everything-for-free rule.

The part I donā€™t like about this is the randomness and luck involved, as a red flag ultimately unpredictable. If youā€™ve just left the pits and a red flag is called, your race is pretty much ruined through no fault of the driver or the team. Conversely, if youā€™re driving on the canvass, a red flag is a godsend and you are artificially put ahead of the pack.

A change I would be in favor of is to allow tire changes and repairs at the cost of a grid penalty on the restart, thereā€™s risk vs reward which could make things exciting and adds a layer of strategy. It preserves the racing spirit somewhat, no one artificially gains or loses out in any significant way.

Another change would be to allow tire changes, but not count the tire changes as one of the mandatory compound changes, that way all cars still need to pit at least twice under normal race conditions.
You might see a lot of drivers restarting on softs since they will have to change again anyway, it creates undercutting opportunities, etc, I think it could be interesting.

I feel like losing out (or gaining) with a red flag isnā€™t what was originally intended, itā€™s more of a emergent symptom and for me it ruins the racing a bit. Drivers are put out of contention for no real ā€œracingā€ reason.

Not that any of this matters, but thoughts?

Those are both excellent suggestions and would bring back some of the ā€œfairnessā€ rather than the luck factor of red flags.

I think thatā€™s a very balanced assessment and well thought out suggestions. How do we go about replacing Masi with @Slinx?

Ya sorry for the wall of text, I just wanted to lay my thoughts out somewhere. I donā€™t think my suggestions solve all the issues, there will always be at least a few people who lose out with red flags no matter what, but thatā€™s just the nature of restarts.

No suggestion will ever fix everythingā€¦ But I think your summary is spot on - the red flag is a safety system, and should thus not have a significant sporting implication. Imagine a rugby team lost 10 meters every time a player had to go for a concussion check? Fixing up the car is easily justified as a safety thing, whereas changing tyres could be both for safety or for strategy. Adding a downside, or a cost, to changing tyres under reds, means it wonā€™t be done willy nilly for strategy.

According to the sporting codes for both WEC (which is also FIA managed) and IMSA, when a red flag is shown in the race, the cars are moved either into the pit lane or onto the starting grid, depending on the situation, and the cars remains in Parc Ferme. No changes or repairs can be made to the cars during this period. In these races, a red flag is seen as a suspension of the race as it stands, and nothing can be done to either the cars, or their positions during the suspension of the race.

My opinion is that this will be a better way for F1 to handle red flags.

Thatā€™s the alternative ya, as you said already in play in some other formats, including Nascar I believe.

I would like to reiterate this sentiment again after watching the race. I had load shedding so missed a lot at the start. Holy hell he just looked like a douchbag on the track, and he should not win the WDC on that display alone.

ummā€¦does bmt mean bite my tongue?

edit: shit, i dont mean to quote reply, sometimes i just highlight text as i read. sorry

As much as I still donā€™t like Hamilton, coz once again he complains in spades. I have to agree about Verstappen, heā€™s back to the Verstappen of old. just when I thought heā€™s calming down. Put him in a slow Ferarri, it calms everyone haha.
