Beautiful.

Not a bad looking car. But that Halo? Looks like someone welded a couple of bent towel rails to the car.

I cannot believe there is no better design for that thing. It must be irritating as fuck for the drivers

So did the rule change about the shark fin design that was so talked about last year? The two car designs we’ve seen so far doesn’t really have those massive shark fin and T wing design anymore.

Yes, the FIA very quickly changed the loophole that allowed for the T-wing. The shark fins were going to stay but McLaren vetoed that decision; so they’ve apparently been banned but still look bigger than I was expecting.

Okay good!! I wasn’t a fan of those at all last year, so glad to see them being removed. Hopefully it reduces the dirty air behind these cars and make them easier to pass at high speeds. I know that was somewhat of a problem as well

Not sure it will make much of a difference tbh… These things are super reliant on front-end grip, and with those massive rear wings the wake at the rear is enough to prevent anyone from following too close. There’s a really cool video on it somewhere that I will have to dig up.

Edit: found it.

Interesting… So the rear wing wake is not actually the issue, it’s more the way the leading car disturbs the air as it moves through it.

Which I always found counter intuitive (i understand it now with the cars RELYING on the downforce for grip/speed). since I was conditioned from a young age that slipstream = speed. NFS, GT4 NFS underground (i believe you even got bonus points for doing it) all gave you speed advantages for getting real close behind your opponent before passing. heh

Agreed, it can seem confusing. The video explains that very nicely. Slipstream is great for speed and helps you overtake on the straights, but it sucks when your trying to follow closely through a corner since you lose all grip. Road cars of course are not as reliant on downforce and thus benefit greatly from the reduced drag of slip streaming without being affected as much in the corners. Hence, they always race bumper to bumper.

Unless they can sort this shit out, Formula 1 is going to die a quick death very soon. Its such bullshit that no one can overtake anyone anymore. Last year was boring as fuck.

I’m normally not excited about these videos because they don’t ever show you the car, but they just fired up the McLaren-Renault for the first time…

I can’t help but wonder how things would have turned out if Ron Dennis had actually managed to secure the Renault V10 deal that Senna craved so much. 25 years later and McLaren-Renault is now a reality.

Me too, I dont just like the racing, I love the tech that goes into it. It’s why Adrian Newey and Rory Byrne are my two heroes, the drivers are after that.

Jup - just waiting for it now - I cant wait!

They’re livestreaming it, I assume? Should be interesting to see what RBR have come up with. I hear they’ve already got the completed car running on a dyno and are very upbeat about it; thus no time wasted during testing having to cut holes into bodywork etc.
Renault are also confident they’ve made good progress, which of course bodes well for McLaren. I hope…
