Formula 1 returns to Africa with 10-year agreement to race in Rwanda

South Africa got cooked

It being titled the “Formula 1 African Grand Prix” and not the “Grand Prix of Rwanda” is a bit ominous. Sao Paulo is not called the “South American Grand Prix” despite being the only GP on that continent.

Yeah makes it seem like there is no chance for SA. Between Venter and Gayton I don’t know who needs a klap.

It was unofficially the FIA that refused to work with the ZA government

Probably, but 1) if we heard that from Gayton, I know exactly how much I trust it, 2) I also don’t want to work with the ZA government, but this guy called SARS keeps insisting, 3) there are ways to get it done with minimal government involvement, if Gayton didn’t want to insert himself into every step like Trompie at a FIFA final.

Watch this interview as to the why of Cape Town and the reason the guys were so optimistic - the Cape Town one was to be done without goverment funds or input

From the single render they included with the official press release, it doesn’t look completely kak, I guess.

Based on the grid slots, I think it’s a counter-clockwise circuit. Got some nice elevation changes. Hoping there’s a decently long straight towards the back behind those trees in a dip. Some nice looking Suzuka-like corners towards the end. Could be a good few overtaking spots if it’s wide enough.

I agree, looks like Suzuka sector 1. And yes, looking at the run-offs it does seem to be counter clockwise, which also seems counter-fun. I think it might work better clock-wise!

I think I found the exact spot of the track, looking at the new runway angle in the background.

Gaseke Primary School should insist on free tickets since they will have prime viewing spot!

I agree!! That deep downhill sharp left hander (T4 if counter clockwise) seems like it’ll be brilliant clockwise. That whole bit reminds me of Austria T4.

I’m still annoyed that Tilke is involved, but the track does look really good..

I dont think Kimi will get the crown this weekend. He will, however, get it in Mexico

Agree there. It’s not just a win he needs, George also needs to finish 9th or lower as well as Lewis 5th or lower. Unless RUS drives into HAM into T1, I don’t see it happening at COTA.
