I have zero regrets. Life is too short to NOT enjoy ice cream. Ice cream is life.
Also, hello folks. Been missing for a while, I know. It’s been crazy.

On a daily basis I miss:

  1. Boerewors
  2. Cheese
  3. Ice cream
  4. Pizza

Being on a lifelong renal diet with a focus on not becoming diabetic is tiring. But… I have to if I want to make it to both my daughter’s weddings/baby showers etc.

In my case I am trying to make life a little longer

So quickish update: On around 10 Aug, came down with a nasty cold. Chills, occasional light fever, exhaustion, sore throat, thickish sinuses, annoying dry cough. Fortunately not much phlegm. Spent 2 weeks fighting it with the usual stuff, just surviving, not improving. Even spent two days in bed sleeping to try fight it off. No improvement. Then on 26 Aug I was supposed to go to Durban for work, but woke up with an inner ear infection. To the doctor, it’s a very bad one. The pain was… well, inner ear pain is unlike any other pain, and one of the worst in my opinion. It’s right there inside your head and face and it’s agony. Turns out I had a bacterial infection in my inner ear/eustachian tube on top of the probable rhinovirus in my airways. So antibiotics, cortisone, etc. Not able to travel because of air pressure difference - can’t equalise! Also, too weak to travel. Could barely walk to kitchen for food. Finally able to leave 3 days later, while still on meds, but made it to Durban. Then had to work like crazy to catch up. Thanks to the meds, I was able to get the core work done. Ear infection cleared up, but as soon as it was gone the chest cold decided to turn into bronchitis and go full chestyness on me. So another round of cortisone and chest medications.

Finally moved on from Durban to Bloem, but I was just not recovering at all, staying the same, struggling, so I extended my stay in Bloem and spent 2 days in bed hoping to get better. Still no luck, so saw a local doc who has transitioned me to a cortisone inhaler instead of pills. Along with all the other meds, it seems to be working, I am on day 3 of working and I’m surviving. Maybe, maybe, starting to get a bit better. I am on such high doses I get heart palpatations and jitters, my hands shake and my right eyelid vibrates by itself. But doc warned me I would feel that. So I work, eat, take care of Jake, and rest as much as possible.

Heading down to CT from tomorrow. Am so behind in my schedule that I will be working overtime every day to get 7 days of work done in 5. Trying to save day 6 for some rest, but will see how it goes. Really hoping to get better soon because this has been a really rough cycle and I’m not done yet. Have to be back in GP by the 23rd to get the rest of my work up here done too. It’s rough, okes. Rough.

So, when you die on the job, how many statues will they build?

Or, as I tell my wife, dead doctors engineers can’t save lives make rockets (?)

Take care of yourself first where you need to. Missed deadline suck, but can always be recovered.

Have you tried Wedgwood icecream?

@Shrike, you’re big into board games. We have a family weekend away coming up and thinking of getting something to play together. I was looking at Forbidden Island, have you played this and have any thoughts?

I have not played it no but I do own and have played Forbidden Desert (yes both made by the same company and using similar mechanics). If you are looking for a fun and easy to play co-operative board game, you can’t go wrong. In Forbidden Desert the losing mechanic is being covered in sand from sandstorms and in Forbidden Island it is the island sinking into the ocean.

I think any family, once they grasp the concept of working together, will love how these play out.

If I can make a suggestion, find a good video that teaches how to play it and watch it with everyone or give them homework to watch it before you play. Reading rules takes up a lot of time. Time you would rather be playing

Unfortunately, if the data is not collected in this quarter, it can never be collected and counted for this quarter. There’s no getting it later. It has to be recorded now, or it doesn’t exist. And missing data is the bane of data analytics, you can’t do trends or assess improvement or decline if the data isn’t available. Also, every day of work I miss is a day I can’t bill, and I’ve already spent a significant chunk of my income to extra days lying sick in bed in paid accommodation away from home. No work, no pay, but still expenses while travelling. In my case it’s less about “will they build a statue” and more about “keep this job by doing it properly and not giving any reason to replace me with a different contractor” because I am, quite frankly put, easily replaceable. I’m grateful to have this job at all.
