Yeah something I dare not post on platforms like Twitter and Facebook is that you can’t fight racism by petrol-bombing and otherwise wrecking Clicks stores. In fact, all you are doing is feeding into people’s existing racism.
Some other thoughts:
- Clicks retail outlets probably had no say over the ads. This was a call that was made at the franchise level. In other words, you are destroying the lives of people who had nothing to do with the offence.
- Why is Clicks getting firebombed, but Unilever (which distributes TRESemé) gets off scott-free? The decisions that created the ad and led to it being placed were probably all made at Unilever.
- Having seen the whole ad (all four images and captions), I agree that it was thoughtless, tasteless, and racist. What’s worse is that it’s lazy racism. It looks like someone literally searched a stock photography website for “frizzy hair” and then “dry damaged hair” and then “flat hair” and just grabbed the first photo the search engine spat out. They didn’t even care if the photos actually matched the captions… they just threw it up and called it a day. (DISCLAIMER: I know little about hair, though I had long hair for a long time, but I do recognise a stock photo when I see one.)
Aaaanyway. This isn’t most epic politics. I bought a Pro controller for my Switch (on special) and it arrived today. Woot!
