Wow, read that article about Rockstar games from the perspective of a career software tester. It seems that in the medium sized game dev companies there are very little adherence to HR policies.
I would hate to be a tester hired on a temp basis with the promise of a performance based hiring after.

It’s actually an entertainment industry issue and US work policies that screw things over. In the UK and most of Europe the labour laws are similar to SA. In the US it’s optional to give employees paid time off.
But the reason every single person at a game dev does what they do (from a professional perspective at least) is to put that “I worked on [mega big hit title] from [well known game studio]” on their CV as this becomes a golden ticket. Plus your name goes on the credits, which can give you bragging rights for a long time.

Ahhh yes, true. From what I read, most game dev companies seem to hire for the duration of a project, not for a longer period of time.

I watched that earlier in the year. It’s a very good video. I’ve got lots of respect for Jeff Vogel.
