Hey folks ā€” just a quick update from me. Iā€™m travelling quite a lot for work at the moment and am not currently in front of my computer during the day.

Iā€™m still looking after things behind the scenes, monitoring our servers and stuff. Iā€™ll be able to be around and talk nonsense with yā€™all when these projects are finished in the next month or so.

We never do that, we speak about highly analytical factual things  in a very unfactual manner which might come across as if we are speaking nonsense but nonetheless we dont speak nonsense at all true story

you should have written a whatsapp article for the front page instead of giving an interview to EWN

I can imagine my colleagues feel the same way . Unfortunately, stopping for 5 minutes to quickly give a radio interview is doable. Taking 45 minutes to an hour to write the piece myself while Iā€™m travelling like this isā€¦ challenging.

Morning everyone. Iā€™ve had a massively kak week so far. Work has kept me so busy I havenā€™t had time for anything else. On top of that, last night I spent 3 hours in traffic because of a massive accident on the N3. Then this morning I think I may have witnessed an attempted hijacking mere two cars in front of me. I want this week over now.

Iā€™m still alive; On a related note I love my job.

I would too if I could work in the gaming industry.

To be honest, I donā€™t overly enjoy my job right now. Waaaay too much time spent in working and juggling management, consulting, sales, branding and operational work. I work an average of 13 hours each weekday according to our timekeeping software, with weekends adding an extra 8 hours on average. On the plus side, I rake in a ton of cash for my company, but I only see my fixed salary each month, being less than 40% of what I actually bring in.

I havenā€™t had any vacation leave in 2 years and only 2 sick days in that time. Most time off Iā€™ve had was the birth of my son last year, for which I took 3 weeks off only to spend 2 weeks in hospital with him and 1 week getting used to a baby in the house. So I guess Iā€™m just really tired, adding to my jadedness.

Luckily my (work) trip to Ireland is coming up end of July and seeing as itā€™s my first trip outside of the African continent (if you ignore Mauritius), Iā€™m incredibly hyped for it. Just maybe I can woo the business prospects there enough to sign some development or consultancy contracts and move my family that side. Alternatively, weā€™ve pretty much decided to stay in Cape Town. Weā€™re looking for property in the Big Bay, Bloubergstrand, Melkbosstrand area as we love it here.

To be honest, I got really bored with the corporate world (I worked in Freight & Logistics, Legal, Banking, Risk management & Mediaā€¦I gained valuable experience, but it was not as satisfying as I hoped. I still have to pinch myself with regards to some people I work with. We have ex-staff members who worked on Eve Online, Elder Scrolls Online, Destiny/Destiny 2, Deus Ex, World of Warcraft, Assasins Creed and Minecraft.

I wonā€™t trade this easily for anything else, mainly because I feel like Iā€™m learning new things and I have some creative license to experiment and a chance to do something different. What bored me about most of my previous jobs is that you end up dealing with solved problems. Depending on the application architecture you have a finite number of blueprints on how to scale and/or improve performance or availability. Every now and then you modernize something, and mostly ā€œmodernizationā€ meant rewriting something because the application architect underestimated or misjudged something in the design or something has changed.

PS - I could have told you that you would likely want to stay in Cape Town forever

So we have a couple crazy cat ladies at work. A couple years ago, they adopted a stray, let it live and wander wherever it pleased. This caused me to stop coming for teatime as my allergies flared up in the tea room (its new hangout). It caused a lot of problems, got fleas in the guest rooms, etc etc. Finally management decided it either needs a new home, or goes to the shelter. No one wanted the poor thing, so it got taken away.

Fast forward to February. Another tenant brings a stray home. It gets fleas in the guest rooms, people posted bad reviews (including the fleas) online. Thatā€™s great for business! I tell the lady to get rid of it, since I had just been given assistant manager position. She pleaded, so I said she has 3 weeks to get it trained to stay at her place (like her other cat, and other ownerā€™s pets). I was on leave until April, so it was more like 2 months. I came back, told her there was no sign of improvement, and she needs to get rid of it. She, of course, ran to the crazy cat ladies in tears. Thereā€™s food/water in the tea room again, and my allergies are going nuts. I had my door closed with a ā€œclosed on account of cat allergies, please come inā€. One of the crazy cat ladies apologized and said they might relocate it to another building, where I still have to support from time to time. I told her weā€™re repeating previous mistakes, and we canā€™t be encouraging it to come here by leaving food out. Thankfully, my boss walked in this morning with my sign in his hand and said heā€™ll take care of this.

I have a soft spot for animals, but not to the extent of it causing me misery at my work placeā€¦

/sigh poor kitty

Dude I feel you are treating the situation the right way. Do not feel guilty!

If they want to keep the cat they need to make their space cat escape proof and keep it there. And they need to do the basics like flea treatments and so forth - also pay for the fleas treatments for the rooms a punishment
