With The Long Dark being so bitterly disappointing I thought I would try a game genre that I don’t often play, a top down roguelite. Children of Morta first caught my eye when Jim Sterling did a video on it.
A truly excellent game, Children of Morta is like a checklist of my favorite things. Hack n’ slash gameplay, dungeon crawling, roguelike elements, constant rewards, charming narrative, gorgeous visuals. Children of Morta has what I need.
I love this game a lot. Watch the video and love it too, for god’s sake!

So I started playing it and it’s very good. It’s grindy and story rich. It is easy to recommend. It’s available on Game Pass or on Steam for R150.
That video is what got me to buy this game on Switch last week. Youtube randomly recommended it to me and I love me some Jim Sterling so I checked it out. Smart move
I LOVE this game. It is so much fun to play. The different characters are great and I love the art style and music. The story is actually very decent as well and I love how it is told, the narrator is great.
Play a couple of runs almost every night before bedtime. Very hard to put down this game.
So I played yesterday and then decided that I’m going to stop playing. Can’t get past the golem. I don’t know if it’s because I’m getting old but I really don’t like struggling. I’m okay with grinding to improve everything to finally beat it but you are stuck in the caves for the whole duration with only a couple of different enemies. So it gets very monotonous.
And in my case very frustrating at the golem.
I want to play games to relax. These days if I find a game too difficult then I quit. There’s so many other games to play. In the past I would continue trying until I finished a game. It just doesn’t seem worth it anymore.
That’s par for the course with these types of game. At least it’s split up into areas and not like some other ones where you have to restart the entire game from scratch.
What makes this game not be monotonous for me is the the different characters. I have unlocked all of them and they all play very differently. It is still hard, I’m stuck at the first world of the second portal right now, but I think one or two more levels and some upgrades will sort me out.
