Chivalry 2 - Return to the Medieval Battlefield

Nearly 10 years after the first Chivalry game released way back in 2012, Torn Banner Studios and Tripwire are taking us back to the medieval battlefield with Chivalry 2. Due for release on 8 June, the game will launch on PC (via Epic Games Store), PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S consoles, and will feature cross-play on all platforms.

Chivalry 2 is a multiplayer first person slasher inspired by epic medieval movie battles. Players are thrust into the action of every iconic moment of the era - from clashing swords, to storms of flaming arrows, to sprawling castle sieges and more.

  • Cross-Play Across All Platforms: Mass-scale battles call for epic battlefields. The inclusion of Cross-Play across all versions smashes the boundaries between PC and console gamers, and allows players to face off on the battlefield together, regardless of platform.

  • Stunning Cinematic Presentation – Massive improvement in visual quality, with an atmosphere that thrusts players into their favorite moments from epic medieval Hollywood action films. Brought to you on the latest and best game engine, Unreal Engine 4.

  • Epic Medieval Environments – Sprawling medieval environments ranging from tournament grounds to epic full-scale castle sieges.

  • Massive Scale – Experience the chaos of epic medieval battlefields as players clash with an intensity meant to capture the large-scale scope of “The Battle of the Bastards” from Game of Thrones.

  • Choose your Fighting Style – Your arsenal expands with the new subclass system that provides more variety than ever before. Four base classes expand to various subclasses, an arsenal of unique weapons each with multiple visual variants, and new support items ranging from oil pots to barricades, supply crates and archer’s stakes.

  • Unleash Hell – Own the field with a variety of heavy siege engines including Ballistae, Catapults, Trebuchet, Battering Rams, Mantlets, Spike Traps, Ladders and more.

  • Build your hero – Become a hero and look the part. A detailed customization system adds huge variety: head type, skin tone, head & facial hair + colors, facial imperfections, face paint, nicknames, heraldry, helmets, armor, weapons, and more for millions of possible combinations.

  • Hilarious Roleplay – Expanded Voice Overs and Emotes enable enhanced roleplaying abilities with many new voice characters as well as the return of the original cast and new animated emotes per character to taunt your opponent a second time!

  • Refuse to Die – Keep fighting after losing a limb, being knocked down, disarmed, set on fire, filled with arrows, your shield broken, smothered in blood and still throwing punches from your knees. Bandages, revives and the new downed state allow you to support teammates and stay in the action until you’ve bled your last drop.

  • Kitchen Sink – Battlefields are littered with dozens of items to interact with. Grab a chicken, set it on fire and throw it; kill a man with his friend’s head; improvise a new fighting style with pitchforks – or tomatoes.

Try Before You Buy - a Cross-Play Open Beta for Chivalry 2 begins next week on 27 May! The six day beta will run through until 1 June.

The open beta is a free download on PC via the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and on Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S.

However, while PlayStation users can access the open beta for free without a PlayStation Plus subscription, Xbox users need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to play. (While Microsoft did ditch the Live Gold requirement for free-to-play multiplayer games from 21 April, Chivalry 2 is a premium title.)

The cross-play open beta is the final playable test for Chivalry 2 before it launches on 8 June. The beta will feature cross-play support got up to 64 players in a single battle, which, Torn Banner Studios says, is designed to capture “the intensity and scope of The Battle of the Bastards from Game of Thrones”.

Scheduled to begin on Thursday, 27 May at 17:00 (11:00 EDT) and ending on Tuesday, 1 June again at 17:00 (11:00 EDT), the Chivalry 2 Cross-Play Open Beta will be available for free to all players on PC (via Epic Games Store), the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 systems, the Xbox One family of devices, and the Xbox Series X|S console systems.

The Chivalry 2 Cross-Play Open Beta client is also scheduled to be available to pre-download across all platforms one day early on 26 May at 17:00 (11:00 EDT). The Cross-Play Open Beta will be the final playable test for Chivalry 2 before its 8 June global release date.

Featuring a ton of new maps, features, and updates based on player feedback from the Closed Beta, there is a wealth of new content to experience and discover in the upcoming Cross-Play Open Beta program.

Chivalry 2 Cross-Play Open Beta content and highlights include:

  • The Slaughter of Coxwell (New Team Objective Map): The Mason Order seeks to make a brutal example of the peaceful village of Coxwell after it declared support for Argon II. Burn the village, breach the gate, steal the gold, and kill the soldiers.
  • The Battle of Darkforest (New Team Objective Map): Agathian forces lie in wait, ready to ambush the Mason army that marches forth to kill the Duke of Fogbern Keep. Destroy the barricade, push the convoy, capture and hold the gatehouse, and kill the Duke.
  • The Siege of Rudhelm (Team Objective Map): After weeks of siege, Agathian forces begin a final assault upon a Mason stronghold defended by the Mason heir. Push the siege towers, capture and hold the gatehouse, burn the tents, push the siege ramps, capture and hold the courtyard, and take down the heir to achieve victory.
  • The Battle of Wardenglade (Team Deathmatch/FFA Map): The armies of the Mason Order and Agathian Knights meet in an evenly matched open field of battle.
  • Tournament Grounds (Team Deathmatch/FFA Map): Elite warriors of the Mason Order and the Agathian Knights fight for supremacy and adoration of the crowd.
  • Free-for-All (New for Open Beta): It’s you versus everyone else in this chaotic free-for-all gamemode appearing for the first time in the Cross-Play Open Beta.
  • Full Customization (New for Open Beta): Customize your in-game appearance and unlock a wide variety of cosmetic options as you earn experience with each of the game’s four base classes and 12 sub-classes.
  • Duel Servers (New for Open Beta): Available for PC only, players can choose to enter special servers set up for players looking to hone their 1-on-1 dueling skills with other players. Participants are asked to abide by the honor system and respect players aiming to focus on 1-on-1 duels.
  • 64/40 Player Server Options (New for Open Beta): Experience the chaos of epic medieval battlefields, charge forth to the frontlines of battle, and experience true mass-scale combat supporting up to 64-players designed to capture the intensity and scope of “The Battle of the Bastards” from Game of Thrones. For players interested in more strategic battles requiring more communication and teamwork, options to join 40-player servers for Team Objective mode will also be available.
  • Same Platform Parties (New for Open Beta): Players can now group up and form a party on the same platform before joining a Cross-Play match.

For those who find they enjoy the open beta when it releases and are looking to purchase the game your best option would be to use the R160 coupon on the Epic Games Store. The coupon is valid until 17 June (i.e. after Chivarly 2 releases on 8 June) and costs enough to qualify.

With the coupon the standard edition will cost you R122.

I’m sure I remember Totalbiscuit and that whole group playing the original. Geez is it that long ago already?

Completely messed up on the dates for the beta in my head Was fully planning on spending time with the beta this weekend, only to discover that it ran last weekend :expressionless: :man_facepalming:

Did anyone by any chance get any time with the beta at all? Any feedback?

Oh no! I missed it too then. Also thought it was coming later.

Found a couple of review videos from the Open Beta. This is one of the better ones:

Chivalry 2 will be available to play at 8am PT / 11am ET / 4pm BST / 5pm CEST on June 8, 2021 on all platforms.

Get your Epic Coupons ready - they should work from after 5PM today.

Confirmed to be working as a buy option on PC @ R121.99 to be exact  (Epic R160 off coupons are valid for only one more week, through until next Thursday, 17 June.)

Reviews of the release version are starting to come in. Seems strongly positive overall so far.

That’s good to hear. I wonder if there are local servers?

Doubtful, I’d guess. At least not immediately. They’d probably need to see a lot of SA traffic to justify a local server. I am hoping to get in to the game to have a look around tonight after between loadshedding blocks, so will see then what I can find.
