Coronavirus - COVID-19

Just read a story where 59 people died because they drank dettol to kill the virus. So do we add that to the virus count?

That is eerie! Yet also incredibly beautiful at the same time.

Once-in-a-lifetime moment (hopefully) to capture footage like this.

These are the sort of ignorant fuckers that make me sick to my stomach, and that will help this pandemic destroy our country.

Bheki Cele needs to arrest the lot of them for spreading false information and charge them with attempted murder.

I dont know if you all heard that voicenote that was doing the rounds - we just got this from her boss (and one of my mumā€™s co workers - I used to babysit his kids)

ā€œHi Everyone. This voice note was sent by one of my registrars to her mother whom she wanted to impress about the gravity of the situation to keep her indoors. The mother subsequently spread the message and it ā€œwent viralā€. It was inappropriate for her to quote her senior colleagues including my colleague Peter Zilla and our Virologists at UCT, in her voice note. We will be taking this up with her. She has asked everyone to please detract this voice note and not send it on. As some of you have mentioned, some of what she says is fact but some is gross exaggeration. There is a host of information from reputable and credible sources on the internet for everyone to inform themselves appropriately. Our country has responded appropriately and earlier after our first case (within 21 days!) than any other country I know of. We have carefully thought through our plans of action in the private and public healthcare systems and within our limited resources all healthcare workers will be rolling up our sleeves to contain this pandemic. It is a fact that no country has the resources to adequately deal with the burden unless we flatten the curve so that on a daily basis we have less acute admissions so that over the months our facilities will not be overwhelmed. The other good news is that of this morning with well over a thousand cases in SA we have had only one death. No other country has achieved that sort of statistic - so let us stay positive. Best wishes to all during this troubling time. Johan Brinkā€

The Absa offer is much better than the one from Standard Bank, which in reality is pretty pathetic.

Standard Bank clients earning R7 500 or less will qualify for a three-month payment holiday on all personal account-related debt.

Absolutely brilliant for people earning below that amount, but letā€™s be honestā€¦ how much credit is Standard Bank giving people who are earning under R7500pm? Anyone with that level of income who is putting more than 20-30% of their salary towards monthly debt payments should probably not have been given a loan by a finance house with any moral standing.

And even if you are able to service a loan with 25% of your monthly salary, how much of a loan is R1800 per month loan repayment getting you?

To add insult to injury, they arenā€™t relieving any of the interest or bank charges on your loans: Customers who opt for the relief will see their interest and bank charges capitalised over the term of their loan agreements.

As commenters on the Moneyweb article about the offer say:

  • Does SB seriously lend money for houses & cars or other to clients earning < R7.5k a month?
  • My American friends would call this Standard Bank response a ā€œNothingburgerā€
  • Thatā€™s pathetic. What about the rest of their clients that are also suffering financial hardship?
