Coronavirus - COVID-19

That’s sad. Most of my current components are from RT - really nice folk all round.
Here’s Rune’s FB post confirming the closure:

That is sad. I guess it’s a sign of things to come.

I wonder how warranties will be handled after they close? We bought a webcam from them the day before lockdown to do our live streams.

That’s very disappointing news. Hope all the staff can find new jobs.

Wow, thats sad news indeed! Here is hoping the staff will be picked up somewhere else and that the owners can carry on with other ventures.

That’s really sad. Thanks for posting… I’ve written it up for MyBroadband.

It is sad, sad news. I know The Joker from MyG days (where is he, btw?) had a close relationship with the guys and gals from RebelTech. Every component in my desktop PC is from them as well.

What an absolute asshole. I’ve lost all respect or any positive views of Gareth, and that letter just cements his status as the countries biggest asshole.

Having a quick look on his website it seems that there are no negative comments regarding his letter. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if any contrasting comments get deleted immediately.

A much better put together and well thought out letter than the threat of revolution put forward by Gareth Cliff.

I got the pleasant surprise of receiving a UIF payment today. I had no idea the company applied and I’m really surprised and grateful that they did.

More curiousity than anything else. just nothing happens when i click download, cursor even changes to the “text” one, meaning not even seen as a valid button to click… just me?

I clicked it and something downloaded - it does that text thing to me as well.

@SIGSTART What do you think of this?

This part wow.

This means they suggest using only a single CPU core rather than the many cores that any video game would successfully use. For a simulation of a country, using only a single CPU core is obviously a dire problem – as far from supercomputing as you can get.

Yikes. I obviously don’t have the time to go through 15,000 lines of code myself, but the report sounds damning.

Mercifully Imperial College isn’t the only institution working on models, but they are going to have to work hard to earn back people’s trust and respect.

That said, models are also not prophecy. They are a way for us to make “educated guess” predictions based on what we know from history.

Here’s an interesting tool that plots historical model projections over actual data: https://www.covid-projections.com/

COVID-19 is a weird one. SARS-CoV-2 is a respiratory virus, but children are disproportionately unaffected. Cloth masks work. And the cherry: there is credible science to suggest that smokers are not necessarily more likely to be hospitalised than non-smokers. For a respiratory condition! WTF!

And while it is fair to criticise Imperial College, the fact is that COVID-19 is well on its way to being the biggest viral killer of the year. If the current trends continue, it is going to outkill Influenza easily, and flu is no joke.

So this is UNISAs plan for exams.

Dear Unisa Students

As you are aware, the May/June 2020 examination period will be affected by the extended countrywide lockdown. The May/June 2020 examinations will be in the form of non-venue-based online assessments. The lecturers responsible for each of your modules will communicate details about the types of assessment that will apply. Please note that no examination venues will be used during the May/June 2020 examination period.

The final examination timetable is currently being prepared and will become available after 15 May 2020.

The following general information is applicable to this examination session.

  1. All students registered for semester 1 of 2020 will be given automatic examination admission.
  2. Students must still submit assignments, as assignment results are used to calculate your year mark which, in turn, forms part of your final examination result.
  3. Examination admissions will be processed on 15 May 2020 and students will then be able to access their final examination timetable for the semester 1 examinations.
  4. The semester 1 examination period will commence on 25 May 2020 and conclude on 7 July 2020.
  5. The university will make every effort to adhere to the original sequencing of the examinations as they appeared in the provisional timetable. There may, however, be some changes. It is, therefore, very important that you confirm your examination dates in the final examination timetable that will be available after 15 May 2020.
  6. Please also take note of the revised session times as these have also been amended to make provision for time to download the examination question paper and then to upload your responses. This impacts on the commencement time of each assessment (eg Session 1, 07:45 – 10:30; 2-hour examination plus 15 minutes to download the examination and 30 minutes to upload your responses).
  7. The modules which have been assessed by means of non-venue-based online assessments will remain the same for this session.
  8. Your year mark will only be taken into account if it benefits you. If your year mark does not benefit you, it will be excluded from the calculation of your final result. It is, however, still important to submit assignments as completing assignments will prepare you for the final assessment. Furthermore, the year mark calculated with your examination mark may result in a much higher final result.
  9. Should there be a clash in the examination timetable, you must select the module that you will complete during this examination period. The other module will be deferred to the October/November 2020 examination period at no cost to you. The university cannot accommodate clashes in the online assessment scenario.
  10. If you are unable to complete the non-venue-based assessment, irrespective of the reason, you will automatically be deferred to the October/November 2020 examination period, free of charge.

Please check your myLife e-mail account regularly for important communication about the examinations.

Kind regards University Registrar

Rather you than me, but then again I havent heard a peep from unisa since this kak started

We also have been getting rumours that the WC will go back to level 5 -
https://youtu.be/ObMrty1gcfM
Our premier stopped that rumour now thankfully. We cant go backwards, for the fact that all our cleaning staff have been calling us to come back to work, that the townships are going on as if nothing is going on, we cant keep this up.

Just the amount of traffic I have been seeing is amazing - it looks like a weekend in the cape - traffic all over.

I saw that on the news now. The ANC in the Western Cape is demanding Level 5.
