Coronavirus - COVID-19

Believe it or not, he has a pachycephalosaurus toy! And something even more to believe, or not, is that they are on their way home this very moment! So yeah, he came home before he could say that dino’s name.

So I did the antibody test yesterday, just incase, and I am negative. I haven’t been this happy about a failed test in years. I will do another one in about a week just incase. But they said it won’t be needed as I am clearly not showing anything nor do they believe I am a carrier.

In my opinion, I think it is highly unlikely that you got it. We were clear the whole time until August and we only got infected when we invited someone to live with us who had it (didn’t know she was positive at the time). We kept our distance but didn’t really wear masks in the house. We suspect that we got infected from using the same bathroom. So 2 people in the same room, both wearing their masks… highly unlikely.

How is your kid? Do they know what was wrong?

Still sick. I can hear him crying in the house now. Not sure if it’s just fatigue or legitimate discomfort. Apparently it is RSV, and a bad case of it.

We’ve had family just cancel their trip down here for fear or risk of infection, due to the resurgence. They were going to drive down over the course of two days. Instead, now they want us as a family to fly up there. In saying that, I think there is even greater risk of infection than driving and I’m not sure I’m comfortable with that.

Anyone been on any flights during this time?

In all honesty I wouldnt fly right now, maybe if it was international flights, but no offence I dont trust SAA or any local flights.

Why wont they drive down? If they drive down its safer = safer for you to drive up as well

They were going to drive but mother-in-law has a condition which puts her at even higher risk.

My car is in dire need of attention, so us driving up is out of the question.

Thats strange. One of my colleagues’ brother in laws company put into place that they must drive everywhere instead of flying now. because of the risk on air-planes.

I’ve flown four times (2 return trips), our niece has flown twice (a return trip) and my mother-in-law flew up to Gauteng this morning on her second return trip since flights reopened.

We haven’t experienced any issues, to be honest. Flysafair was professional and clean in it all and the airports were efficient. With only passengers and staff in the buildings it didn’t feel as crowded. I’d say go for it!

Shame. And they put him through all that hell just because of Covid. I wouldn’t have allowed it, but our circumstances are different. If one of our children were to get sick right now (actually, they were just a week ago), I’d be able to say with complete confidence that it is not covid. They are still in isolation from the rest of the world, which is bad, because if any stranger talks to Kate she starts screaming and if anyone touches either of them, they scream to the point where they throw up.

I actually feel bad for kids during this time, they are the ones suffering the most and understanding the least!

They’re the biggest reason why I don’t want to travel, specifically fly.

My mom flew FlySafair before the resurgence and she is an “assisted passenger”. Got great service at Lanseria, mediocre service at King Shaka. She says she didn’t feel endangered or at risk at any point, they make you wear a mask on the plane all the way, and they don’t serve any refreshments.

So our church has been receiving visitors for Sunday services. You had to book your seat, the seats were spread out all over the auditorium, and masks were a requirement. There are also sanitation stations all over the place and temps are taken upon arrival. But they now decided to go back to doing online only. This is in response to the amount of infections in our area (I blame the matrics  ). Personally I think this is a wise decision. Our congregation is a very varied bunch of people and the arrogance of youngsters will only hurt the elderly and the weaker of us.

I actually flew BA today from PE to JHB. The flight was very empty so I managed to score a seat with no one around within a 3 row radius. They handed out a quiche and a bottle of water (no other drinks allowed) and you had to throw your own packaging away just before the decent. They also let you disembark row by row. Security is also slightly different. I had to take my belt and safety shoes off to pass through security, since they don’t do physical searches anymore.

All in all it was very strange, since I’m used to flying. However, I felt like there’s a bigger possibility of contracting the virus at your local grocer than at the airport. They seem to do what they can, but there still seems to be a few people who just don’t get the whole social distancing thing… I suggest just controlling what you can by keeping your distance and wearing your mask.

Our setup is pretty much the same. We’re still open with things not too hectic in Joburg for now. We’ve got an outdoors carols evening happening this Sunday, which looks like it will be in time before any potential harder restrictions happen at least. But if the infection rate here sky rockets we may need to make the same call. At the moment it’s the older folk who attend, the younger families preferring to stick with online, so we have make sure they stay safe.

Thanks for the feedback and responses everyone.

We have decided that we won’t be travelling, as it is my whole family (myself, wife, 8 and 1 year old boys). Should we pick up anything we don’t want to risk mother-in-law getting any infection as she already has conditions.

Going to be a little bit of a lonely Xmas but it is the wiser decision we believe.
