Coronavirus - COVID-19

We were blessed in that the first and second waves didn’t affect our community (family, friends, Church) all that much but this wave has hit us big time. In the past few weeks we’ve had the following:

  • My daughter’s class was closed for the week for the kids to do online learning because one of the kid’s parents had tested positive.
  • My wife had to close her pre-school for 10 days and have the place sprayed because one of the teachers tested positive. The school is now open again but many of the 70 kids are staying at home, at least 6 families have positive cases (parents, aunts and uncles etc.) Many schools in the area have had classes closed because of positive cases among parents and teachers.
  • In our Church congregation we’ve had more than 6 people test positive this week, including our senior pastor. I’ve been exposed to a Covid positive person and so am isolating at home. We’ve made the call to close services for the next few weeks and do online only. Thankfully none of the covid-positive people were at the service last Sunday.
  • My wife currently has very worrying symptoms, she’s been to the doctor and we’re awaiting the test results. The kids are doing online learning.

We have a holiday planned and booked coming up at the end of the month so I’m really praying we’ll be all clear by then - we’re all desperately in need of some time away to relax.

I am grateful that my parents have had the jab and many of the 60+ people in our congregation have also had. That is one less thing to worry about - not that they can’t catch the virus - in fact some of those currently positive have recently had their jab - but that their symptoms will not be life threatening because of the vaccine.

Damm dude yea I agree this wave will be hectic. I hope not like India hectic.

I agree on the holiday aspect I think many people just need a rest from it all. Hope all goes well with your wife.

All one can do is do what is needed and it will pass Its just a matter of time.

Thanks man, I really appreciate it.

Hoping the Mrs is given the “Negative” notice soon. And that all is well enough by month end for you to take that holiday - you’re right, pretty much everyone needs a vacation about now  Everyone except that chap with all the “HOAX” stickers on his car. He can stay here and clean the place up while we’re on holiday.

I’m with you there. Stay strong! :hugs:

This is the way!

Best of luck there @DarthMol. May everything work out alright and may both your wife and you overcome this and be healthy.

I live in the same area as him and also the first and second wave didn’t hit us but now this wave has been bad. My one boss’s husband is currently in ICU with COVID and she has it too and my other boss’s mother died yesterday. I work for a small company and over the last couple of weeks almost half the people in the company have gotten COVID. Luckily I haven’t been at the office in over a month.

I do have some good news. Both my parents were vaccinated on Monday.

Hoping you guys get the all clear soon, @DarthMol.

Both my parents, my 88 year old grandmother, my uncle, and both my inlaws got their first jabs. According to a study of healthcare workers in the US, two weeks after getting the first jab you’re seeing a 95% reduction in infections. (Moderna COVID-19 vaccine prevented 95% of new infections after one dose in study with healthcare workersrs - UPI.com)

Unfortunately, our company lost the chairman of our board to Covid last week. My grandmother’s next-door-but-one neighbour passed away yesterday, and the manager of the retirement home was admitted this morning. A close colleague and friend was exposed on Monday, which sunk her plans for a family getaway from Tuesday evening onward. Midstream hospital sent one of their patients to my wife’s state hospital ward, since they ran out of ventilators. To be clear, they sent the patient a province over, for the lack of beds in GP.

Please, guys, whether you believe in Covid or in conspiracy theories, in the vaccine or in the pharma companies, please stay as safe as you can.

Its awesome to know the community here stretches beyond gaming and superficial concerns!

My uncle, in his 60’s, and my gran, 92, both tested positive this week. My gran is showing very light symptoms, but the worst thing for me is her isolation. She is alone in a room in her retirement home, and nobody is allowed in to see her! Its killing me knowing she is so alone.

I am trusting she will be OK, she had had he first jab and is supposed to be getting the 2nd jab this week (I think), but now there are doubts if she will get the jab because she is sick… It gets a bit confusing thanks to a lacklustre vaccination strategy and a lack of proper information from those tending to her.

A scary thought is that her facility has old folks who are all around her age, and she fears way more for others than herself. This is the target market for COVID-19!

To those here who has lost family or friends, and those who have worries about currently sick people, know that I will keep you in my prayers

I miss having only superficial concerns. :frowning:

What I do fear more of is the battle that this is putting on kids. Kids should be free to run and play, not have to worry about a mask every time we go out and sanatise or not touch things. Watch, the outcome of this will be a generation of OCD children, Gen-OCD.

As someone who works at multiple schools, (including one that was shut down this week due to 10 staff cases and 6 students), I can safely say I wouldn’t worry too much about that. Kids are mostly ignoring this, even the kids that are like “i should stay at home sir, i could get sick”. Well then maybe stop wearing your mask on your chin and stand more than 20cm away from my face?? That would be a start in showing me you have actual concerns

The kids are ignoring the rules, most sports practices and breaktimes look no different than in 2019. So yea, doubt they’re going to get OCD from this

What really pisses me off is the people not being careful, i mean besides the wedding I had to attend and the kitchen tea where covid protocols was followed by all - and its 3 weeks later and not one person there was sick or got anyone else sick. Meeting @SIGSTART and @Ani for dinner last week was the riskiest thing i have done in a very long time :stuck_out_tongue: And we kept being careful.

Then we have people who refuses to sanitise or wear masks when entering the shop - we now wont let anyone in if they have no mask - we even offer them disposable FREE mask and they refuse to wear it

Decent Op-Ed in the Daily Maverick this evening. Long read, but well presented case.

As @Avatar mentioned yesterday, Gauteng hospitals are in trouble:

And the ones that are carrying the brunt of community indifference and government inefficiencies are, again, the hugely underappreciated frontline healthcare workers, many of whom are still waiting for their vaccinations.

A doctor at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, sounding as if he was on the verge of breakdown, today described the situation at that hospital as “absolute chaos” and “getting worse and worse”.
“We are all feeling desperate. We are not okay. Pretending that it is not fair on the medical staff and nurses,” he said.

At Helen Joseph Hospital, a senior doctor said the facility “is struggling hugely. More than 60 people are waiting for a bed in the emergency department."
He added that the “numbers are astronomical – worse than the first two waves, both because Gauteng has been hit so hard and because of CMJAH’s [Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital] closure.

A doctor who works at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital and the Tshwane District Hospital complex reported that, “It’s bad. Overflowing. Trying to open more beds. Trying to get more nurses and doctors.” He added that “Deep demoralisation is setting in with the senior doctors.”

Oh sorry, I didn’t post an update here. She was negative, thank goodness. And I’m still symptom free, so I’m hopeful that I’ll be in the clear. Just a few more days of quarantine.
