I changed off of Discovery recently. The only participating garage for the fuel cash back is some way out of my way, so the money coming back to me just never really materialized. The system is also loaded against you quite a bit, for example your annual roadworthiness check which is worth a few point could expire, and nothing in the fancy smart app would remind you to go and do it. The dongle recording your driving behavior would stop working, and you’ll only figure it out when weeks later you realize you’re not getting any points. It just feels like the system doesn’t really want to help you maximize your safety which should reduce risk, which they supposedly want to do.
So when my wife bought a car earlier in the year, I got quotes for all of our insurance consolidated, and it came out quite a bit cheaper at Old Mutual. So much so that my budget did not change with the wife’s new car added on. Since I’ve got one retirement account with Disco and one with Ole Mute, I’m getting benefits with either one of them.
Life insurance stayed with Discovery, though, but I think that’s just my broker not dealing with life insurance specifically. Also got health and banking with them, so its enough to still attract some benefits.
Thinking of planning a drive up Langebaan way this weekend with the family. We’ve never been up that way, is there anything particular I should go or look at?
I love both places, just be wary of the water in Yzerfontein, it has many riptides. But walking from the harbour across the rocks you will find many tide pools and so on.
Before picking mussles just check that they are safe, aka no redtide or pollution spills. Also when picking black mussles just check that its not a conservation area nor that they are small.
I haven’t been there in over 15 years. My aunt has a house just above the harbour, so did a lot of fishing from the rocks and swimming hence the warning. I got caught in a riptode once.
Keep in mind the further up the coast you go the colder the water aka wetsuits.
In langebaan there is lots of restaurants and the lagoon to walk around. Bear in mind DONT speed at any point there. They slap hectic fines on people. There is the nature reserve where you pay to go in and drive thru with some hiking paths.
I don’t think we’ll be swimming or anything of that nature. I wanna pack a picnic bag for the road and stop somewhere scenic and possibly walk around a take in the scenery. Would be nice to hike or walk along some trails etc.
Trying to cut avoid additional expenses as that will be put into petrol so will try to stay away from restaurants or the like. We’re interested in scenery and sightseeing, nature and wilderness.
Yzerfontein has some ostriches roaming around if you head to Pearl Bay’s side. There are some nice picnic spots on the beach that are unspoilt and quiet and quite private during off-peak times.
