Hello and good morning. It’s Monday, 6 January. The first working day of 2025 for many people. Good luck. Be brave.
Good morning. Good luck.
Morning all
Does anyone have any experience with sending minors on flights solo, are there any airlines that offer this, domestic and international?
My boss sent his 7 year old to join his mother in Germany with Lufthansa and he payed for someone to travel with. Lots of paperwork.
Most airlines have some form of “Unaccompanied Minor” service - for a fee- but the conditions vary from one airline to the next. And there’s a difference between domestic and international flights too.
For example, British Airways allows children to travel alone on domestic or international flights if they are at least 14 years old. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 16 years old.
SafAir by comparison, will allow children older than 5 to travel alone. “Unaccompanied minors must travel on an adult fare. Children over the age of 12 can travel alone, and they fly on an adult fare. If you’d like to use our unaccompanied minors service for children aged 5 to 11, the fee is R750 for each leg of the journey.”
International travel by minors also has a bunch of Home Affairs anti child trafficking requirements and documentation that needs to be done before minors will be allowed to travel outside of the country.
Best bet is to search “Unaccompanied Minors flights + your preferred airline” and see what’s available. And then visit the DHA website to find the required forms and documents for travel by Unaccompanied Minors. The website is a nightmare to navigate, especially on mobile, but go here: Department of Home Affairs - Regulations on Traveling with Children and choose the options that match your circumstances.
What is going to make matters worse, I am sure, is that I don’t even know where his mother is or how to get a hold of her.
Most notably an unabridged birth certificate, even if you (as the parent) accompanies your child.
Yeah, that’s definitely going to make travelling internationally very difficult for the minor.
A Parental Consent form matching the names on the child’s Unabridged Birth Certificate, like @Shrike says, are one of those DHA absolutes. Not having access to the mother will need the other biological parent to complete affidavits and provide reasons as to why the mother cannot give consent directly.
