Talking about Betty’s Bay, @aldyr

The family and I took a drive down that way for a day-out a few weekends back and we wee blown away by how beautfiul it is there. To a point where we’ve considered moving out that way. Given what you’ve said about the failing infrastructure raises some concern though.

Like @FarligOpptreden said, Kleinmond is a better area. It is the hub of everything in the region. Power, internet, water, everything is managed there. It’s the focus and as such, if there are issues, they get fixed very fast. Betty’s bay, Pringle bay and Rooi Els mostly have some form of coping mechanisms, which is off the grid type solutions to varying degrees. I did not want to spend that amount of money on improving backup, water and the like for a holiday house, that we now go to, for a break. And to be fair, for all my moaning, I was more missing family and friends, than annoyed with being inconvenienced.

A little additional planning, goes a long way. Always keep water around for drinking or just general use. A few ecoflows. Fibre is available now, but also keep some mobile data package ready for things. If you work online, do as much offline work, and cache as much as possible. Don’t do the world of internet of things. Always have a go bag ready (which you should in any case). Get your insurance in order, and check those contract terms. Know what is important, and what really isn’t. It worked for us.

It was a reset, in a world, where everyone had become the doomsayer, and reacted negatively, to whatever was on fire in the news today, instead of just getting on with life and enjoying what you have. Neighbours greet you and get to know you. You will suddenly become a bird expert. Ever have an owl, fly silently passed your head, in the dead of night, while you were ogling the milky way stars overhead. No light pollution, more stars to see. If you embrace the beauty, the nature, the simplicity, all outdoor things, that place will feed your soul.

Morning everyone.

Some, must have been drunk, crashed into our water meter piping feeding the building and the fence behind it. Now we have no water. The irony is that they just fixed the fence and piping from the last time this happened.

Oof. That’s got to be beyond irritating! Think they’ll need to install some solid concrete bollards this time around. Or else it’s just going to happen again.

Apparently we’re having some freezing weather later this week. Heard on the radio it will drop down to 10/11/12 around the Northern Suburbs by the end of the week. Looking forward to the snow-capped mountains afterwards though! We have a beautiful view of the mountains (seeing all the way to Paarl and beyond) right from our bed.
