Epic fined $245 million for sketchy Fortnite purchases

Charging people because of a confusing or dodgy interface and especially allowing kids to spend money with no parental input is not good. There have been other fines in the past as well. To be honest its not a good look at all.

“Fortnite’s counterintuitive, inconsistent, and confusing button configuration led players to incur unwanted charges based on the press of a single button,” the FTC wrote in the announcement. The complaint also criticized Epic for allowing underage players to make frictionless, unauthorized purchases without sign-off from their parents.

I’m sure Epic is still in the positive figures after that fine just from what they’re being fined over alone…

Spot on. Fortnite is still bringing in literal millions on a daily basis. The fine will be covered by two months of normal sales. They’ll throw up a FOMO driving “Special Event” week of some sort, release a set of “One Time Only” skins, weapons, and characters, and pay the fine off in a week.

What a fine business they have there.

They should restrict access for a limited time. That would force them to take note.

I said this in a reddit post on this topic, these huge corporations should get fined based on a percentage of yearly revenue or held assets.

> Run dodgy practices for a few months/years
> Profit from dodgy practices > 500 million USD (speculation)
> Get fined 245 million USD
> Still profited hugely off said dodgy practices
> This was profitable for [company] lets find more untapped dodgy practices
