On the back of its battle royale mode, Fortnite has passed PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in concurrent players on PC.
Fortnite hit 3.4 million concurrents last Sunday, February 4, developer Epic Games confirmed in a blog post. Around the same time, it suffered from numerous server issues and outages, which are the main topic of the post.
As Epic explains, Fornite has gone from 60,000 concurrents to 3.4 million in just a few months, leading to some scalability issues. Looking ahead, Epic says it seeks to expand and optimize its server system to accommodate the game’s ballooning player base.
The studio is so hellbent on expanding, in fact, that they put out a call for help in the very same blog post, urging those with domain and server expertise to apply.
For comparison’s sake, as of last weekend, PUBG had around 3.14 million concurrent players on PC.
Fortnite has rapidly consumed Epic’s time and resources over the past few months. Earlier this year, on January 18, the studio announced it was diverting resources from Paragon, its free-to-play action MOBA, to prioritize Fortnite. Barely a week later, on January 26, Epic confirmed Paragon will shut down this April. And if Fortnite comes to Nintendo Switch, as Epic boss Donald Mustard hopes it will, it will only get bigger.
