Game Awards Statistics

The annual Game Awards is in 2 days, and to celebrate, I looked back at past winners of this most prestigious award.

In the gaming world, there are two awards that stand out from the rest as being a bit more illustrious than the others; The Golden Joystick Awards and the Spike/The Game Awards. These two have been going strong in the gaming world for many years. Each year their nominees and winners make the headlines across the internet. So I looked at these two in particular.

The GOTY winners of each award show:

This is the full list of winners of the GOTY award from each show over the past several years. Interestingly, there has been very little overlap between these two awards shows in the overall winner category.

The GOTY winners by platform:

It come as no surprise at all that cross-platform games dominate the winning list from both award shows. Interestingly, the Spike/Game Awards has never given an award to any other exclusive titles other than PlayStation titles. Perhaps this year Nintendo may get the nod from them?

The GOTY winners by genre:

This graph is a bit more interesting, and shows the variation in the type of games winning the GOTY from each award show. Seems like the Spike/Game Awards has given to a wider variety of games than the Golden Joystick Awards. Ultimately, the Action-adventure and RPG genre rules the roost. Seems these genres are just better than any other…

The GOTY winners by Studio:

No clear favourites can be seen when looking at the studios, but Rockstar and Bethesda does lead the way in terms of overall winners

So, what do you guys and girls think about the awards shows and their past winners?

This post is too good and I have to little time to reply to it properly now.

I agree more with the Golden Joystick Awards list. No way was GTA 4 better than CoD4, I haven’t played RDR but it’s hard to imagine it being better than ME2.

Action-* is really the favoured genre. Not one sim/management game on that list.
