Have you ever bounced off a game the first time around but then at a later stage something motivated you to give the game a second chance? How did your opinion of the game change?
I can only think of a basic example at the moment - Minesweeper. When I tried out the game the first few times it didn’t make any sense and I didn’t enjoy it at all but at a later stage I decided to take my time and really learn how to play. After that I would often spend time playing the intermediate and, later, the expert levels. I found it quite relaxing and entertaining.
I have to say Elder Scrolls Online. Waaaaaay back when it launched I got a key from The Joker on MyGaming and tried the game out. Granted, it was when the game didn’t shine quite yet and I was knee-deep in my Guild Wars 2 addiction. I soent maybe 5 hours in the game and binned it. Years later I decided to give it another go and dropped it again after another hour or so.
So, what changed? Well, after finding a new love for MMOs recently (playing Destiny 2, The Division and Guild Wars 2 on PC) and wanting to spend less time behind a keyboard due to intense work loads, I decided to jump on a sale for ESO on PS4. I fired it up, started a new character and was greeted with my favourite setting in Elder Scrolls lore - Morrowind! I subsequently sunk 10-15 hours in it and enjoyed every second. The game plays beautifully on a console and it’s super relaxing sitting back on the couch, feet up and gamepad in hand playing a low-intensity MMO.
Thanks to ESO my love for the PS4 has finally been rooted and I haven’t touched PC gaming in 3 weeks. The closest I got was installing PS Remote Play on my Macbook and streaming Horizon Zero Dawn from the PS4 in bed tonight next to my wife and little munchkin. And it worked beautifully, might I add…
What I can say is there was this really tough race in Mafia that I couldn’t beat. I left the game after that, a few weeks/months later I tried it again and I beat it.
