Glasses/specticals

More and more people wear them. How did you know you have to get glasses?
Specticals?

  1. When you get consistent headaches from looking at the computer screen
  2. When you have to make the font bigger on your screen or decrease the resolution
  3. When you need to increase the font on your phone to see what is happening

Get an eye test from someone you trust.

Get your eyes tested; For me it was odd headaches and eye strain. Also noticed that I was struggling to read street signs after the sun went down.

Got mine in high school when i stared to notice i was unable to clearly see what was written on the board

This is very important. I got my glasses on a 2 for 1 special. Turns out, I needed 1 prescription for driving, and 1 for being at my desk… (Note: it is still a weak prescription, my drivers license says I don’t need glasses)

Now, I was getting one pair with tinting for driving, and one with some anti-glare thing for PC screens. So when we were discussing which lenses go in which frames, I was thinking out loud, something along the lines of “which ones would I wear for sitting in the living room in front of the TV”, mostly for gaming to read inventory screens and whatnot. I was thinking because it is further than my PC screen, I’d have to use my driving glasses, but I didn’t want to game with tinted glasses. The anti-glare thing would be nice, but again, TV not as close. The freakin’ lady says “I’ll just make them both at the half way point, is that ok?”

I just sat there feeling stupid. I had no idea what was going on. I don’t spend that much time in the living room. I didn’t know why she would suggest this. She made me feel like an idiot. I reluctantly agreed to it. (What the hell is wrong with me. I should have snapped at her)

So now I have two pairs of glasses, neither doing what they need to do, and when I do need to wear them, they just make my eyes worse. This was a couple years ago, so its way too late to do anything about it, and I certainly can’t afford a new pair…

I’m “lucky” in that I only really need my glasses for driving and working. I don’t game or watch TV with my glasses on as I really don’t need them for either.

Glasses were pretty much a given for me with everyone of my family on both my mother and father’s side all wearing glasses.

I’ve got an astigmatism which makes me near sighted. I noticed that I found it harder and harder to read writing at a distance (signs, projections, text on the TV etc.) It was certainly worse at night time. So I finally went for an eye test after it got worse and worse and landed up getting glasses. My world literally went from SD to HD - I could see the faces of people in the cars that passed me! I could read signs easily again!

Fortunately it is only for long range that I need the glasses so I generally don’t where them around the house unless I watch TV.

I was battling with everything being a touch fuzzy and cant really read the dstv bottom bar without squinting.
I don’t wear my glasses everyday as I seem to lose them often.
Bought the cheapest frame as its just another way to be milked of cash

Thanks for giving real life exsample seems I need classes.

Been wearing since about 16. Same as @TechThief. Started realising if I sat at the back of the class, I struggled with what was written on the board.

Mine is old age, I am far sighted as a result. It means I can see far fine but not close. 2 Years ago I started getting massive headaches every day and I stare at a computer screen or 3 every day for both work and play.

I know an optometrist (used to teach him in school) and he heard me out and sat me down for an eye test. Turns out both eyes are deteriorating fast, one more than the other. He gave me a good hardy black plastic frame and lenses that compensate for my failing eye sight.

No more headaches for 2 years but I have been noticing that I can now not see anything on the screen at all without my glasses. Trying to see the blurry text on screen was what was giving me those headaches.

The comment about a trustworthy optometrist holds true the same as a trustworthy mechanic. I have friends who were royally screwed out of thousands of rands because they had to get “special” frames or tinted lenses when they did not need them. I guess everyone is out to make an extra buck or 10.

Getting old sucks.

I got mine early in high school. Can’t remember whether I had any complaints.
I have an optometrist in my family that gets me sorted with spectacles and contact lenses.

Do you see the same with both eyes if you cover one?

I think my left eye is a bit worst.

At the moment I’m pretty much legally blind without my glasses. Like I cannot see any detail at all on any item from about 2m away without my glasses. I started wearing glasses since I was 14, and I cannot really remember how or when I realize that I need glasses.

Pretty much ny story as well, except I have to wear my glasses constantly. My right eye has the worst astigmatism and I can barely see 3m without my specs on.

I’ve been wearing glasses now for 9 years and it honestly doesn’t bother me. In fact I tend to look weird to myself without them on. I made it part of my “style” and wear them proudly.

Couldn’t drive at night, normal headlights looked like brights and eye strain when driving…

This started in Grade 7.

I sat in front of the class and still could not really read anything on the board, it was effectively blurry text – so, I had to get spectacles. It helped for vision, but not my grades  - 'cause, y’know, I’m lazy af.

Started wearing glasses permanently from when I was 17, I think. Fortunately, it had become something of a fashion statement and not so much classified as “nerdy”.
