I’ve started playing The Outer Worlds and even fairly early on in the game you are faced with some moral choices - and to the game’s credit there isn’t an obviously good or obviously bad choice, much like life it’s about compromises. Still in saying that you can lean to the good/more right thing to do, or you can follow a darker path.
What type of approach do you tend to take in games that offer choice? Are you Good? Are you Bad? Neutral?
Do you sometimes roleplay your choices rather than just picking what you the gamer feel is right?
Most people tend to go for the “good” choices and not always for noble reasons. The rewards tend to be better when picking the good path - even if they more long term benefits.
Probably my most evil act in a game was detonating the nuclear bomb in Megaton City in Fallout 3. I just wanted to see the explosion, and it did not disappoint!
I usually go for the good path first. Sometimes I’ll decide beforehand I’m going to be evil but then when I’m faced with decisions I just can’t get myself to do the “wrong” thing. Often times I will end up being good the first time I play a game and then on a second run I’ll try to be more evil, but sometimes I just can’t do it.
The most evil thing I can remember doing in a game was in Jade Empire. There were two horrible acts that I can clearly remember. The first was tainting the water dragon and then using it’s power for myself (I actually couldn’t do this; I reloaded my save and killed the dragon to free it from it’s torment a few minutes later). The second was binding Death’s Hand to my will and then binding my companions once they objected to that decision.
I usually play good at first and then I turn bad for my second playthrough . Depends on the game though so I might sometimes go somewhere in the middle or switch things up in a single playthrough (if I can get more loot).
I remember in Mass Effect 1 though, you had to pretty much stick all the way to either good or bad, otherwise some dialog choices gets locked out. But if the game allows to switch things up, I’m usually a “mostly good thief who might commit the occasional murder if nobody is looking”.
Always good, doing anything else makes my skin crawl. I follow this so much that I refuse to play games where you are evil, like GTA etc. I even refuse to watch movies/series about bad guys like Breaking Bad and the bank robbery movies Oceans x
You have a very solid moral compass there. It’s commendable.
I always end up going the good route, as anything else clashes with my ethics and values. I don’t mind watching an anti-hero story or playing an anti-hero game myself, unless there’s no obvious light at the end of the tunnel and everything just ends in doom, gloom, death and misery.
I usually go good route first, then evil one. I don’t mind doing evil stuff but when something feels peticularly scummy then i try to avoid it. Also doing a morrally grey choice leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
From what i have experienced in games, the good route is an investment, where you may not get imediate rewards but in the long run, the building of allies and reputation will help with end game scenarios.
Most evil thing i probably did was in Fable: The lost chapters. Where good vs evil is a huge part of the game. I killed Whisper in the arena because i though i would not get the cash reward if i didn’t. I also killed everyone in Knothole glade, baught their houses, and then rented it out for cash.
To me it depends on the title and what character I am; In Mass Effect the “good” Shepard just felt natural to me because the character is initially presented as a moral, by-the-book soldier. I’ve played through (1-3) as good, evil and on one playthough I started good (as in ME1), got more “evil” in ME2 and downright pissed-off disillusioned Commander in ME3.
With Fallout (like the entire series) I go for a more morally ambiguous type character. Me, Myself and I come first. If I can manage to help someone without too much effort and some gain for me I’m fine. Someone getting attacked by deathclaws? Screw that, I’ll wait for them to die so I can loot the body.
I really struggled with Spec Ops The Line, man that game really plays with your morals
I guess I just wasn’t that invested in the game, because it didn’t have such a big impact on me as everyone claimed it would. The game felt like a generic army third-person shooter - almost like Gears in Dubai.
In games with morality choices I always tend to go for the good side. I remember in Black and White, your creature would physically change depending on your moral choices, and I hated the idea of it going to the evil side.
I tend to hate sneaking around in games that allow it but in my current game I have had to. I got a mission that sent me on a full assault on a factory, had no problem with that. Once I got inside I saw that factory workers were running around trying to hide from me. The thought of killing them, even by accident bugged me so much that I reloaded an earlier game and snuck into the factory instead.
