For example in the Wheel of Time the Aes Sedai have this breathing trick they use to not feel the cold. I tried researching that and it turns out there is some sort of Buddhist breathing technique that is similar to that described in the books. I haven’t managed to do it though.
(Also love the Wheel of Time! Surprised there wasn’t a controversy when Peter Jackson plagiarised the opening lines Robert Jordan uses in his books for the opening monologue in Lord of the Rings.)
Looking up history
Yeah, I’ve also looked up tonnes of stuff, from World War 2 guns and battles (Day of Defeat, Medal of Honour, Call of Duty, Band of Brothers) to the Meiji Restoration and Satsuma Rebellion (Last Samurai, Rurouni Kenshin).
The Legend of Bagger Vance also comes to mind. We wanted to find out if its based on a true story. It turned out to be an adaptation of The Legend of Bagger Vance: A Novel of Golf and the Game of Life by Stephen Pressfield, which in itself is loosely based on the Bhagavad Gita, the Hindu scripture (mis)quoted by Oppenheimer when he said he was reminded of a line from it when they detonated the first nuclear bomb:
“Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds.” I suppose we all thought that, one way or another.
That led me to an article which explained that Oppenheimer’s quote was somewhat of an oversimplification and could more literally be translated as: “I am become the world-destroying time, the destroyer of worlds.”
Most recently I read up about the persecution of Christians in Japan during the Tokugawa Shogunate of the 1600s after watching Silence, Martin Scorcese’s 2016 adaptation of the book by Shūsaku Endō.
The film is an adaptation of a fictionalisation, so there is a lot of speculation used for dramatic purposes, extra characters introduced and so on, so it’s always fun for me to square that up with what we have in the historical record.
Cool topic. I look up stuff all the time. Whether I’m reading a book, playing a game, watching a movie/series, etc., if I see something that I don’t really know or seems interesting I will look it up. E.G. I’m busy watching through a bunch of seasons of Medical Detectives and every time they mention some scientific method or whatever I will google it and read up about it. I don’t necessarily (try to) put it into practice but I do enjoy reading up on random topics.
Oh I’ve looked up plenty of things while watching or playing.
It all started with Deus Ex. There was an article in PC Format about the books that would make for great reading with the story line of Deus Ex. I read those books and made the story that much deeper.
I’ve also read up on The Elder Scrolls lore, and most real-life movies I read up on the actual events to compare how true to real life the movie was.
