Hello Aptos!

Microsoft Office is getting a new default font.

After 15 years of Calibri, Microsoft is starting to roll out a new default font for its suite of office applications. Calibri is being replaced by a new font called Aptos.

Today we begin the final phase of this major change where Aptos will start appearing as the new default font across Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel for hundreds of millions of users. And, over the next few months it will roll out to be the default for all our customers. We can’t wait for Aptos to be readily available since it was crafted to embody the many aspects of the human experience.

If you want to check out the new font and start using it (you early adopter, you!) you can do so before it officially gets released through an Office update.

Aptos is available as a standard font on Mac devices. Just select it from the font dropdown and done.
For Windows users, choose Bierstadt and Bierstadt Display and done. (Bierstadt was the original name for Aptos).

If you want to set Aptos/Bierstadt as your default font already, expand the Font dialogue box from the menu, set the font and font size you’d like to use for all new documents, and then select the “make Default” button on the bottom left.

Microsoft commissioned five new fonts: Bierstadt, Grandview, Seaford, Skeena, and Tenorite. It was our hope that one of them would be our next default font for Microsoft 365. All of them were added to the drop-down font picker. From there, as you got a chance to use them, we listened to your impassioned feedback and chose the one that resonated most which was Bierstadt. But as there was a change of guard so too the name. Bierstadt is now known as Aptos.
