Hollow Knight: Silksong

Hollow Knight is one of my all time favourite games and so I am very excited about its sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong. This time round you play as Hornet who featured in the first game.

From E3 we were treated to some gameplay and I have to say it looks good!

I tried liking the original but for some reason it just doens’t gel with me. I’d like to give it another go at some point though.

I hate platformers but I loved Hollow Knight. The look and feel of it just really held my attention. It does get crazy difficult though.

I had a brief look at the new Gods and Kings free DLC which is essentially a collection of the boss fights in the game - but harder. I have no idea who all these masochists are who would enjoy this kind of punishment.

Me too (Silksong). I loved it, and then I got to the second boss. Now I hate it.

I finally got a chance to play yesterday and begin this epic journey. It’s a slow burn start - and thinking about it, so was Hollowknight. But I’m already getting sucked in. The environments are amazing, the music beautiful, the sense of exploration is great. I’m even enjoying the boss fights so far. Rather than trying to rush getting in extra hits to try end the fight as soon as possible, I’m appreciating the visual and audio cues for attacks and learning the patterns.

What a journey this has been! Team Cherry did it again, they created an incredible world filled with amazing, curious and strange creatures. The gameplay was top notch, I can’t believe some of the moves I managed to pull off as I got better at the game. There were moments of frustration, times when the challenge seemed far to difficult, unfair even, and then… I’d prevail and set my sights on the next obstacle.

Is it better than Hollow Knight? Objectively so, bigger and more expansive, more beautiful, more refined. Subjectively? While fans will divide over which is the better depending on their tastes, all can agree that these are masterpieces of the genre.

For me I feel that I crawled in Hollow Knight so that I could soar in Silksong. The challenge was greater but I felt more up to it. In HK I loved exploring the world but dreaded the bosses, I’d try brute force my way through a fight trying to end it as quick as possible. With Silksong something just clicked with me and I fell into the rhythm of learning the dance of each fight. That’s not to say it came easily, some fights really stomped me. Rather it was my attitude, my desire to pick myself up and get better each time until I finally did it. The reward was worth it.

Both Clair Obscur and Silksong (my personal games of the year) have transported me on incredible journeys, reminding me of why I fell in love with single player adventures in the first place. 2025 has been a good year!

Now to wait another 7+ years for the next entry in the Hollow Knight series
