I have a collectable card game problem

Hi, my name is Oltman, and I might have a problem. I think I am hooked on Pokemon The Card Game!

So, my girls have been coming home with Pokémon cards. Lots of them. I did not have any cards before and they have never bought any cards, yet their collection kept growing. I take my hat off to their playground negotiation skills! They claim it started with their freinds giving them some of their duplicates and then haggle their way to a collection.

I always thought it was just a card collection game, not realising how big the actual card game is. I did some research, learned how to play and created a free Pokémon TCG Online account where you can play for free. I figured if I know how to play, I can get them to actually play with their cards rather than just swapping and haggling and showing them off.

I learned about energy cards and trainers, something they did not have at all. After lots of searches, I found a trainer kit on Takealot, providing everything needed to create 2 decks of cards, and perfect for them to play the card game.

It has now been 3 months. I have about 5 decks built for different play styles. I have cards in sleeves to protect the cards. Each deck has its own deck case to protect the sleeved cards. I am searching local sites for specific Pokémon and their evolution cards to strengthen my collection. I am about order 2 large mouse pads with custom graphics on that we can use as our playmats. And my YouTube feed is slowly being overtaken by Pokémon videos…

I have a problem!

Just kidding, the problem is still about 3 months away!

I never thought I would enjoy Pokémon at all. I still don’t watch the series, but the card game is absolutely amazing. It is way more tactical than I ever would imagine. I initially thought the “prize cards” are cards you could lose to the opposition, but you don’t risk your actual cards when playing!

The deck building is nearly as intense as the actually playing. Balancing the trainers, energies and actual Pokémon, and knowing which types have strengths and weaknesses against others, makes it super intense. Testing and trialling your deck is not just fun, but also essential! There are competitions world wide and you can see exactly how the pros build their decks, and even buy a deck with their exact cards.

But the best part of all is sharing a hobby with my girls! We play often, and my 10 year old has a real knack for seeing advantages of certain cards, and is developing her own strategies. My 6 year old struggles with the reading, but understands the basic concept and rules, so we play as a team.

They have their own decks and I allow them to trade their duplicates. They are even more obsessed about “mint” cards and wont trade anything that has scratches or bends. They can even recognise fake cards, something that apparently is a problem on the school grounds.

Does anybody else here have Pokémon TCG card collections, have played the card game or have an interest in any other card games like Magic The Gathering, Yu Gi Oh etc?

Not playing myself, but my 7 year old also stated by getting a card here and a card there from school. Then he started asking for more so we bought some for him from the local China-mall store because at his age they just trade and swop to collect-em-all.

Initially I did not think about it this way, but these China-mall, and I suspect 90% of the cards the kids have at schools are counterfeit. If you buy legitimate card, don’t send them to school or let the kids trade them unless they are 100% sure. You will most likely end up with a bunch of fakes in return.

Also went through the Pokemon thing with my oldest daughter a few years back ;-). We had a lot of fun. I also have 2 decks of magic. My latest craze is Hero Realms and Star Realms. I play them with my youngest who is now 14. Also a deckbuilding game but you play it out of the box, no collecting needed. It is fun and quick and I don’t have to spend a ton to actually get a working deck together.

@oltman I literally just bought my two kids a pack each, not thinking much about it, my oldest (10yo) has since taken ownership of his little brother’s collection and has been going through them and trading. I haven’t thought much about it as I looked on the cards and honestly, it looked a little complex to even bother and I wasn’t sure about the depth of the game. I will look into it more.

@DarkStar regarding the above, I bought them in a little local China store. So I assumed they are knock-offs and only cost me R30 per pack. This wasn’t including any of the metal ones.

@Shrike that looks really cool, I have been looking for a nice little family game to get so thanks for the recommendation.

Our local China Mall had massive amounts of Pokemon cards. I didn’t check the price, though. I think they’re reject prints, rather than knockoffs, but I guess the ethics of purchasing either is about the same.

We had a saying, back in my school days, that our parents should be happy for our Magic The Gathering hobby back then, as it meant we had no money to dabble with drugs.

For interest sake, both the Realms games I mentioned in this thread have free steam downloads if you want to see what they are like digitally before getting them in the real world. Real world games are a LOT more fun though. Banter/jokes/chatting make a board game session a lot more memorable than playing it digitally.

Times like these I miss having a PC.

So, I designed my very own Pokemon TCG Play Mat!

This is the first time I have used InkScape, and I quite like it! I am printing these on 800 x 400 mouse pads, one for each of us, from Gecko Media.

You have NO idea how long this took (Pokemon logo is downloaded):

I am sure there are more efficient ways, but when you brute force your way through an app you do feel a bigger sense of accomplishment!

I love Inkscape. Been using it for years since early betas.

That’s hugely impressive. That you went and made your own custom logo from scratch when there’s a number of Pokémon font generators and free Pokémon font clones available.

I admire the dedication. And the end result is way superior to what a free font could produce. (and more rewarding like you say!)
