INDYCAR Racing: The Game

iRacing Motorsport Simulations and INDYCAR are pleased to announce a long-term licensing agreement for iRacing Studios to produce standalone INDYCAR titles for console and PC. As part of the agreement, iRacing Studios will release an INDYCAR title for PlayStation, Xbox and Steam in the second half of 2026. The new product will mark the first dedicated INDYCAR game in more than two decades.

“INDYCAR fans have long been clamoring for a standalone title for consoles, and we’re excited to give them what they’re looking for in 2026,” said Tony Gardner, president, iRacing.com Motorsport Simulations. “iRacing Studios’ standalone INDYCAR title will offer all the excitement of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and an immersive experience that fans of all ages can enjoy. We are already very excited about how the game is coming together.”

The game will feature a robust, multilevel career mode, licensed drivers from the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and INDY NXT by Firestone, and online multiplayer. The new product will be built from the ground up, with a dedicated development team creating the game on iRacing Studios’ proprietary and enhanced Orontes engine.

11 months later, and we now have an official (if somewhat predictable) title for the game, an official logo, and a (delayed to) 2027 launch plan. We also got 2 “Early Gameplay” images (which, in my opinion, look more like development renders rather than high quality in-game screenshots).

iRacing and INDYCAR today announced INDYCAR Racing The Game, the highly anticipated official standalone INDYCAR video game, developed by iRacing Studios, the world-renowned motorsport simulation company, is set to launch in early 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox consoles, and PC via Steam.

The game is being built by iRacing Studios and, if they can pull it off, it should be the first standalone IndyCar title in more than 20 years. The plan is for it to launch in the run-up to the 2027 Indianapolis 500, which makes a lot of sense from a marketing point of view.

As you’d expect, the focus is on authenticity. iRacing says we’ll be racing across the full range of IndyCar venues, from Indianapolis Motor Speedway to the street circuits, road courses, and ovals that make the series so unique. Beyond that, they’re keeping their cards pretty close to their chest.

No gameplay footage yet, and there’s still no word on career mode, multiplayer, AI, customisation, or any of the other features most of us are waiting to hear about. Those details are apparently coming over the next few months.

One thing worth mentioning is that this also confirms the game has slipped from the original 2026 target. Personally, I’d much rather they take the extra time than rush it out half-finished. If there’s one thing we’ve all learned over the last few years, it’s that racing games don’t benefit from being pushed out the door before they’re ready. Yes Project Motor Racing, I’m looking at you!

The name might not be the most exciting (“INDYCAR Racing The Game” is about as straightforward as it gets!), but honestly, if the physics, AI, career mode, and presentation are good, I don’t think many people will care what it’s called.

So… what do you all think?

  • Happy to wait until 2027 if it means a better game?
  • What features are at the top of your wishlist?
  • And how much of iRacing’s online sim racing DNA do you think will make it into a standalone game?

Whats better? An iRacing sub with Indycar? Or a standalone Indycar? The Indycar scene in iRacing covers just about all the real tracks and have the partnership, so if they can get the same gameplay working in console and make it controller friendly it could be a hit. I think they need to make it the same level of sim vs arcade as the F1 game to be a success.
