It seems that the Colin McRae Memorial Challenge Rally is proving to be an actual challenge! Seven drivers have started the rally so far, but only 2 have managed to successfully complete all 12 stages. So far, the Scottish sludge has knocked out both the champion and the P2 driver from our last championship.


Who else will succumb to the soggy Scottish sirens? Are you bravehearted enough to even try it? And will you manage to hold on to your car and reach the end in one piece?

I’m about 1/3 of the way through… Lost my headlights right near the start of the night stage. Lost about 40 minutes on repairs so far iirc…

New year, new rally championship season. I give you…

The Global 12X12 Rally Championship


12 rally events - each one to run for two weeks at a time.
12 different locations - all the good ones, no Argentina :smiley:
12 car classes - a different one each time.
12 stages on each rally - auto selected by the game.

Begining this weekend at midnight on Sunday morning, each event will run for two weeks through until midnight on the Saturday evening. The game has randomly selected the 12 stages for each rally as well as the time of day and weather conditions, and the surface conditions. I haven’t adjusted any of these in any way at all.

The only settings I did manually apply were the event order and the car classes for each. And for these I simply put them in in the order that they are listed in the Season builder. I skipped Argentina and I skipped the R5 class that we used in the last season.

Also applied automatically is the Service stop every third stage. Not my favourite option, and I was tempted to change it, but I think I’d prefer to see more drivers finish more stages on as many rallies as they can, so I’ve left them in. (We can perhaps look at doing a Hardcore mode event or two with few or no stops in-between this championship and the next.)

Round #1 is the Rally Monte Carlo, and we’ll be using the Modern Rally Group A cars. You get to choose from any one of: Ford Escort RS Cosworth; Lancia Delta HF Integrale; SUBARU Impreza 1995; Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI; or SUBARU Impreza RS. Choose wisely though - you’ll need to run it for 12 very tricky stages in the Monaco mountains.

Some info and tips, for those that want to improve and/or survive this rally or have struggled with it in the past.

Monte Carlo, as with all Dirt Rally 2.0 locations, is essentially one long stage, subdivided into snippets of the original. What may help is knowing that this location is divided into 3 types of stages.

  1. Tarmac, at the bottom of the mountain
  2. Snow, at the top of the mountain
  3. Ice, in the middle of the climb or descent

The tarmac sections are the fastest, and have the most grip, but are also the narrowest parts of the road. They also have plenty of unforgiving stone walls, that can at best, batter your car to within an inch of it’s life, and at worst, spin you around leaving you with very little room to turn around in. Tarmac can be done in winter or normal tires, with soft tires obviously being the fastest. However, only choose normal tires (soft/medium/hard), if you know you won’t need to drive in snow with them.

The snow sections are the slowest, and have the least grip, but are also the widest parts of the road. Live your drift king dream here. Don’t be afraid to handbrake. These sections are best with winter tires only.

The ice stages, are in between the tarmac and snow stages. Phil tends to say something like Ice from here on, and the surface of the road will be patchy. They have the nightmare characteristic of having the most inconsistent grip of the stages. They’ve literally put black ice in the game. When it’s patchy snow on the tarmac, expect grip on the tarmac, and dullness on the snow. When it’s patchy ice on the tarmac, expect absolutely no grip on the ice. The road will look dirty? You’ll need to figure out which colour is actually the ice, and avoid accelerating or braking harshly when on the ice. What this amounts to is, one second, you have grip into a corner, the next second, it’s gone, and you’re a passenger, on a flight to meet your maker. And to make matters worse, these are the only stages, that have gaps in the both the stone walls, as well as wooden barriers, meaning you can terminal damage very easily, and in slow motion.

Suggested tactics:
You have Attack(drive flat out), Defend(drive solidly, never over committing) and Survive(drive slower, assuming you’ll need to react to unforeseen surfaces or calls or corners).
If you haven’t figured it out already, I’d recommend you Survive the dangerous sections, ie. ice. I tend to lean towards Attack for sections, that I’m comfortable with, and Defend in sections where I feel I’m less so. Slide as little as possible during the tarmac and ice stages, but please do slide in the snow. This is a conservative strategy, to help you finish the whole rally event not one stage alone, with a better average time.

Too bad I suck at driving games lately. I’m probably the only one here who has extensive experience driving in snow and on ice.

14 hours left. Just finished Scotland. Even got in one green sector after all my blunders.

Also, Dirt Rally 2.0 where even though you need to repair your engine your rather replace your lights.

I pushed through last night, finished 3 stages and did ok. Got to stage 4, the 12km heavy rain stage, and did ok, and then 9km in I somehow did terminal damage, still don’t know what I did, I’m sure the crash wasn’t that hard. Ohwell. At least I’m higher ranked than Aldyr and Boogey :smiley:
