Thanks I’ve been through that article already. I’m going to try and find old CDs to put out, but a lot of my plants are too small to hang them from, but I’ll try and make a plan. I can get rubber snakes from the china shop, but not any time soon. I don’t have any cash to spare, so I have to look at free solutions for now. I also don’t have a very long hose, and whenever I see them, they’re in the trees just out of reach of my sprayer. I do plan on getting a longer hose as a higher priority, but again, no funds
I still have a few CO2 capsules for my pepper pistol, so next time I catch them in the area, I’ll use that to chase them away while supplies last. The noise does keep them away for a time, at least the troop at my last residence. I might get some flak from the other residence about the noise though…
I’ve not tried anything, I wanted to see which critters show up before I took any measures. Stink bugs randomly everywhere, ants on the corn, aphids on the leafy greens.
I’ll give the soapy water a try, otherwise I’ll just get some mild organic insecticide.
Aphids are evil. Best bet is to burn the plants lol. Or dunk them in hot water. Neem oil works very well, but you have to apply it every couple days, and it isn’t good to use on anything you’ll eat, as it takes a couple weeks to wash away. Ants are also known to farm aphids.
I will take some new pics on Sunday - I’m going away for the weekend.
Mum’s beets came up as well, but they were to close together so she replanted them spaced out. Now they need time to recover and the heat here isn’t helping. She is planning on putting up shade netting over the plants.
Here are some of the tomatoes I planted. The big ones are Great Whites, they are kind of creamy orange when ripe. Mild tasting and fleshy.
The ones in front of them are meant to be Pineapple tomatoes. You can see that they are smaller than they should be and unripe. We’re worried about the birds so I brought them in. The plant was a bit stunted too.
The small tomatoes in front are Cherry Pears. Fun little things and not too acidic or tangy.
In the back are white brinjals which have been growing like crazy, and there are some miscellaneous peppers too.
I usually get seeds from Bid or Buy. There are a couple of big sellers there, like Seeds for Africa. The cherry pears were actually from my local nursery though (Eckards). They were sold as seedlings and they have gotten wild, producing lots of fruit.
Seeds for Africa is a good site, living seeds as well. Just be careful with other sellers on bid or buy. There could be a lot of ‘ebay’ types out there that’ll just sell seeds out of a pick’n’pay bought fruit.
Don’t you get hit up for extra cost on shipping or anything buying on bid or buy over their main website?
I think the shipping costs are more or less the same (last time I checked). I just use BoB as a starting point for searching for the seeds I want. So far I have not been disappointed with the seeds I received. They were all pretty exotic stuff and most did grow.
Yea we had a VERY bad infestation on our lemon tree, mum tried all kinds of things, from natural remedies, old folk tales the works, that stuff saved our tree.
