I skimmed the article to get the actual list of mods infected, and I am in the clear. However, it might be prudent to double check all the files AGAIN.

Has anyone made use of the Minecraft Realms services?
Yip, I have. Works well, perfect for an easy way to have people play together without needing to set up your own hosted server. Also allows you to load any of the MInecraft mod packs for Bedrock edition.

I know it states you and x friends play for free, I am assuming they are meaning as free to the service, not to play Minecraft for free. Therefore assuming each person would need to own a copy of the game to partake in the play time?
Correct. You rent the server, in essence.

I think we kind of had it when we had a bit of a MEW server, but I wonder what options I have available to play across platforms such as PC (Mac) and Console, so playing between Bedrock and Java editions?
You need to run it as a server. You can technically do it on your desktop and have your consoles connect to that. The plugin you’ll need is GeyserMC
There is a standalone version, which might work with the java server on your Mac, but if not, you might need to grab Spigot or Paper to run the server.
