No Man's Sky Trailer Showcases Changes Since Launch

It shouldn't come as a surprise to anybody that No Man's Sky did not live up to the hype it received at launch. While it was far from a bad game, it did leave a lot to be desired and left many gamers extremely disappointed. I used to work in a retail gaming store and after about two weeks of release we had more or less twenty secondhand copies of the game sitting on our shelves, not going anywhere.

I really enjoyed No Man’s Sky when it came out, but I only have room in my life for one all-consuming space game, and Warframe has stepped in to fill that gap.

I gave it a total skip.
From what the promised at I think it was at E3, to what they provided at launch was terrible.
And trying to improve a game that much after launch… A bit too late I reckon?

Also decided to give it a skip and decided i would rather watch streamers play the game. After finding out what happened when you eventually reached the “center of the universe” i was glad i decided to not invest my time and money into it.

What happens? =D

I have some sympathy for small studios trying to do something new with interesting tech who suddenly get whipped up in a large publisher’s hype train.

That said, the head of Hello Games handled things poorly.

I had the fortune of missing the hype train for No Man’s Sky entirely, so I mostly got to play the game for what it was, and enjoyed myself immensely.

To be fair. They didn’t wait until now to try and “fix” the game. They have released quite a few updates as time went on. As someone who is not a fan of this genre at all, I would say it’s at least worth a try. It’s the perfect game for when you just want to relax and zone out.

Yeah that is an important point. They added in base building, freighters, and multiplayer elements quite awhile back for PC and PlayStation.

I don’t know if it has changed through updates etc. but back when i last watched it (few years ago), when reaching the center your camera zooms out and you get to start all over again… yay!

Depending on the actual patch notes, I’d consider picking this up on a Steam sale.

It wasnt even that bad on launch. People just hate getting Molyneux’d.

They have had numerous updates indeed. But to try and fix a game AFTER release, and make it what it was meant to be initially and what was shown… Then you are going to have a bad time

I get what you’re saying but I disagree to a certain extent. Should they have just left the game as it was at launch and not improved on it since it was AFTER launch? Hell no. Most games these days get lots of updates that improve the game. Look at Destiny and Division. Both of them were pretty disappointing at launch but eventually through numerous updates the developers brought the games in line with what they were supposed to be at launch. Rainbow Six Siege and For Honor are good examples as well.

I’m not saying it’s OK to release a half assed game and fix it afterwards, but I think it’s great when a developer actually listens to the community and work on improving the game instead of cashing in on all of the sales from pre-launch hype and calling it a day.

There is a difference between improving a game. And trying to make it what was initially shown to the public. All games get patches and updates these days yes. But that is not No Man’s sky is doing. They are fixing and creating the game that was meant to be as time goes by. BIG difference. Hence why the game failed and MOST people requested refunds within only a few hours of playing it. Not comparable to Division and Destiny. Division was a great game (not everyone’s taste), and just got improved massively. but they released what they promised and showed. Destiny was just about DLC after DLC.

Hopefully the clip below shows it properly.

To each their own. IMO both Destiny and Division where pretty shit at launch. I bought both on release day and sold them in less than two weeks, returning much later once they “fixed” them. No Man’s Sky was very overhyped and they didn’t give what they promised, true, but they listened to the community and kept on improving it. Now I could be wrong, but I don’t think they ever talked about base building or land vehicles before launch so it wasnt just a matter of updating to give us what they promised before hand, they added fresh content as well. Give them the benefit of the doubt and try it out. You will be pleasantly surprised.

Agree with Destiny, but Division was oraait.

I was just stating that what they did, brought on their own demise.
I have never had the urge to really try No Man’s Sky, not my kind of game, but can understand why their player base plummeted so hectically. Hope for them it improves though, but I fear first impressions cost them many players.

Yeah no I agree with the overhyping and not delivering on promises hurting them 100%, and deservedly so. My point is just that they have really improved the game and it is pretty good as it is right now, with the NEXT update looking to improve it further still. This is not my type of game at all either, if you described the game to me even as it is right now I would probably not be inclined to give it a try because I don’t generally play games like this. However, I gave NMS a chance and I’m glad I did. It’s something I can play when I just want to go full potato mode on the couch. :stuck_out_tongue:

I bought in fully into No Mans Sky. It was the reason i bought a PS4. I was the one sitting awake at 12am on release day waiting for it to unlock. I jumped in and when i saw the time again it was time to go to work the next day.

I love this game and have loved it since launch. I get why people were mad about it, but if they actually just sat down and played it, they would have seen that it was a great game.

I cannot wait for the new update.

The problem is that people set up their own expectations of what they wanted to see in the game and the devs didn’t do a good job of managing expectations.

Not exactly. The video above I posted showed what the devs had and was working on at E3.

I still believe at the core of it Hello Games had this vision that they wanted to achieve. And then the sony marketing department went ape shit with it. And then everyone got swept up in the hype and it just snowballed out of control from there.
