Morning!

Also 3 more days! Yay! My Raru order was also dispatched late last night, hope it can do Cape Town to Middelburg in 3 days time. Soli, make it so!

Morning everyone!! It’s my last day at work today! I’m really looking forward to taking some leave. This has been one incredible year and a rest is well deserved.

ok so very noob question: is the AMD Ryzen 3 similar to to a core i3?

So, seeing as I’m back working in IT, I’ve identified a whole host of other gamers in the company. I blew one dudes mind when I told him about the Humble Bundle. He’s like freaking out that you can get all those games for so cheap.

When looking at the i3-8100, then the Ryzen 3 1300X is about similar when not overclocked in performance/synthetic benchmarks. However, the Ryzen 3 can overclock which the i3-8100 can’t and then the Ryzen is quite a bit faster in synthetic benchmarks.

The i3-8100 is faster when gaming though, even if the Ryzen is overclocked. If you want to build a gaming system, the i3-8100 is better. If it will be a mixed use case between gaming and work stuff (photoshop, CAD) or just work then the Ryzen is faster.

Both the i3-8100 and Ryzen 1300X are priced the same, and since you can’t overclock the i3-8100, you don’t need a Z chipset motherboard. In that case, the Intel setup will work out a little bit cheaper.

So they were pretend gamers until they met you.

oh ok so for a more gaming orientated system you would recommend an intel setup over an amd one? im looking at upgrade kits to upgrade my current i5 setup. so im looking at the costs involved so i know how much to look at saving.

my current system is 8 years old

What is your budget? It is always easier to look at what to get once you have a ballpark amount to work with.

Also, do you/would you overclock a CPU? If not then one can look at non K Intel CPU’s, which also brings down the price quite a bit in the Intel camp.

Well I am an Intel fan, but it’s not that easy I guess. I always look at performance comparisons and current prices to determine what would be a best buy.

dont get a ryzen 3 rather get a ryzen 5 1600 it costs about R1000 more than the Core i3 but its a 6 core 12 threaded cpu compared to the ryzen 3’s and core i3’s it is alot faster than your 8 year old (probably 6 year old, the core i range only started in 2010) i5 which i assume would be a sandy bridge processor and its performs quite admirably in gaming compared to your current cpu if you look at the benchmarks

Most games are optimised for multi cores (since the consoles have 8 threads) these days so dont limit yourself with an entry level processor with less than 8 threads

I have to agree with @DohcWP here. It would be much better in the long run to save up a little more and go with a Ryzen 5 or i5.

Mmmmm i dont have a budget yet iwas just browsing to see what things cost. but i would probably say R4500-R5000 is my budget. and i will not be overclocking. dont see the point of overclocking

OH I am not planning on getting an i3 or ryzen 3 i was just wanting to know what the difference was. i am looking at an i5 type system, but since i have not upgraded in forever i dont know whats happening with hardware and dont know what goes for what

your issue is going to be ram since ram prices skyrocketed during this past year

cheapest ram i can find

Thanks Doc, ja i see ram is insanely expensive at the moment. i was looking at the kits on offer on evetech(wont be buying form them) just looking at what they have put together to get an idea of what to look at. i might even be going the 2nd havd route on carbonite to upgrade

and in other news my christmas gift from the hubby has arrived. he got me the Coolemaster Masterbox Lite 5. i so want to open it but i have been expressly told not to as i have to wait for christmas eve
