“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.

Personally, I’m pleased that Disney is continuing with its live action remakes. The animated originals will always be classics, but these versions are introducing (and reintroducing) these stories to a whole new generation.

Colour me excited! I’ve watched the other 3 animated movies (yes, there are 3) countless times with my son. He was obsessed with Arial around age 2. He watched the trailer now with me and immediately recognised it.

The itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organized to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.

As the top YouTube comment says: “This is the most Wes Anderson trailer for a Wes Anderson movie that was ever Wes Anderson’ed.” It’s Wes Anderson. It’s mad as heck. And it has a list of about everyone in Hollywood as a cast. I’m going to watch it.

White Bird

Cinema Release | 25 August

From the best-selling author of Wonder, the book that sparked a movement to “choose kind,” comes the inspirational next chapter.

In White Bird, we follow Julian (Bryce Gheisar), who has struggled to belong ever since he was expelled from his former school for his treatment of Auggie Pullman. To transform his life, Julian’s grandmother (Helen Mirren) finally reveals to him her own story of courage — during her youth in Nazi-occupied France, a boy shelters her from mortal danger. They find first love in a stunning, magical world of their own creation, while the boy’s mother (Gillian Anderson) risks everything to keep her safe.

Based on R.J. Palacio’s book, White Bird: A Wonder Story, like Wonder before it, is an uplifting movie about how one act of kindness can live on forever.

I hear the faint rustle of an Academy Award nomination form or two…
