When it comes to fighting games or games with a fighting game mechanic…
Do “button mash” or are your presses more of a tactically-based method?
I started playing Batman: Arkham Asylum on Hard, and something I discovered was “spamming” the buttons can lead to my death/defeat, as the ‘dodge’ action doesn’t register quickly enough when it comes time to outmanoeuvre my opponent. The same with Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, I have to time my hits in a controlled sequence, otherwise I will be hit and potentially lose my combo.
Playing against other people is a different story; always too much on the offensive, getting my ass beat by my opponent.
I had a friend that once got into a Mortal Combat (or one of those fighting games) competition somehow, even though he didn’t play the game. He went up against seasoned players, and actually won a bunch of matches by simply mashing buttons. But got wrecked by the really good players.
I’ve never had any interest in fighting games, so the times I did play them I never bothered trying to learn the combos or anything. So I am a full-blown button masher.
I tend to get greedy when it comes to getting hits on a boss - this is usually my downfall. I’m currently playing Hollow Knight - in many ways it is like a 2D platformer version of Dark Souls and I’ve had to restrain myself from button mashing and rather focus on dodging and getting in hits at the right moment.
