Spotify launched in South Africa

Apple Music:

  • largest catalogue
  • allows uploading your own music
  • huge selection of curated playlists and radio stations
  • exclusive content & big ongoing investment from Apple
  • has some really bad original video content
  • no online web app, must use iTunes on desktop
  • best library management by miles
  • can have folders for your playlists, which is awesome
  • auto playlists generated for a track are really bad from my experience
  • 256~Kbps VBR audio quality, but it’s very good
  • has student and family plans

Google Play Music:

  • also lets you upload your own music
  • only available via web app on desktop unless you use 3rd party apps
  • simplistic library management, not much more than favouriting stuff
  • 320Kbps quality
  • curated playlist and new releases interface is horrible
  • has by far the best auto generated playlists imo, the single reason I use GPM.
  • has family plan

Spotify:

  • also simplistic library management
  • 320Kbps quality (on desktop and mobile)
  • web app available but kinda sucks & reduces quality a bit
  • vast assortment of curated playlists, truly staggering
  • auto stations are okay, inbetween Apple & Play Music imo
  • lets you collaborate on playlists with friends
  • has a free tier
  • no family plan
  • does not let you upload your own music

Deezer:

  • no
  • don’t use them

Simfy:

  • no
  • even Deezer is better\

List I found on SAGamer

Well that’s biased as all hell.

What’s wrong with Deezer? They might even have a bigger catalogue than Apple (they advertise 53 million songs now) and they just launched on Xbox One.

Agreed that Google allowing you to upload your own songs sets it apart. Lack of desktop software is a major minus, though. The web app is OK, but nothing on the amazing experience you get from Spotify. Apple’s “upload your own music” feature is contrived. It’ll match your ripped songs with stuff it has in its library, but you can’t “upload” anything iTunes doesn’t already have.

Here’s a comparison I did for MyBroadband. Bitrates and supported platforms (as of yesterday) in a table. Since then Deezer has launched on Xbox.

Yea that other one is a person opinion by someone - and since it was the only list they all fall for it.

Fair enough. Everyone’s entitled to their (wrong) opinions :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Dude they claim your article sucks :disappointed_relieved::disappointed_relieved: Its the one thing I find on SAGamer - they are very quick to diss other publications - their formuites not the staff
And then they have some true asses on there that i try to avoid because of their know it all attitudes.

Well I think their response to my article sucks.

So now we all suck and no-one’s information is useful .

In fairness I didn’t mention iTunes Match or Google Music’s upload functionality, but they didn’t mention bitrates and codecs, reported library sizes, or supported platforms.

If everyone in South Africa’s online community could just be a little more constructive I feel like everything would be much better.

Day 1 DLC: Oh it’s just Sauron. Don’t listen to the haters, Wyv. Just get the information you need. Even that biased hot-take had some useful objective details in it. The trick is filtering out the useless and keeping what you can use to make a decision.

Hahahahaha dude Sauron and I go WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back - back to when prophecy was a thing, I met him and his wife a couple fo times. The way he acts on a forum, that is toned down from real life - I cant stand the man - yes he has valid points here and there, but for pete sake -he needs to stop attacking people when they leave a comment that doesnt agree with his.

He is one of those - knippie sout people everything he says you take with a pinch of salt

I would love to try it but its too hard to move music libraries. My apple music one has been building for the last 4 years. The thought of starting over terrifies me. So I will stick to what I have at the moment.

So, those that have been trying out Spotify, what is the verdict? Is it something to look at? Should I consider moving from GPM for it?

I haven’t tried GPM at all, so I don’t know what the comparison would be like.

Personally, I’ll be subscribing to premium. There are some albums that I want missing, but I’ll just keep those on my phone separately. My main thing is the PS4 integration, which is pretty tight.

It’s recommended playlists and general recommendations are on point. That and the console integration is great. I say it’s full of win!

Had to do a roadtrip for work, so I set my phone’s spotify to offline mode. Worked all day Sunday. When I got into the vehicle Monday morning, I launched the app, and it said I needed to log in.

So I tried. “You cannot log in while in offline mode, please log in to change to online mode” or some such catch-22. This has apparently been a ‘feature’ since some time in 2017. Only fix is uninstall the app, and reinstall, which wipes all 3000 of my downloaded songs.

I queued them up again, but… I’m seriously contemplating cancelling my subscription over this. Terrible, terrible…

Wow this is not good to hear. With Google Music at least it automatically switches to offline mode once you lose connection. I am on the cusp of subscribing to Spotify so this is somewhat worrying to hear.

Yup, I’m not happy. Just google
“You are currently set to offline” spotify

Multiple issues listed, a pathetic excuse for a workaround fix (delete password and re-enter it, which doesn’t do squat), and of course, reinstall (and lose your offline library)

So its good that I uninistalled it - just because of the constant notifications they send me cos I dont use the app 23/7

@murfle Did you cancel with them or are you still using them?

I’m thinking of dropping Google Play and switching to Spotify. I scrobble music and it annoys the crap out of me that my music hasn’t been scrobbling for ages and I didn’t realise. Spotify can scrobble internally wich is awesome.

@SIGSTART, didn’t you switch to Spotify too?

I kinda know what scrobbling is, but I’m not sure how it works. Is it something which happens automatically or do you have to set it up?
And what if I listen to a song partway, then decide I don’t like the song and skip it, does it still get added to wherever it is added to?

You have to set it up. And yes if you only listed to a song partway then it gets added.

If you scrobble to Lastfm for instance then you can remove it there if you don’t want the song to be displayed.

I wrote a thing on MyBroadband. Spotify is awesome.

However, I am not giving up Google Music because it lets me upload the stuff these streaming services invariably lack. I also get Google Play Music cheaper (R49 special price locked in for as long as I maintain my sub).

Thanks. I have the same thing where I get Google Play Music for cheaper. Hmmm will sleep on it.

Actually @Beo just showed me https://www.googleplaymusicdesktopplayer.com/

So I switched to that. It’s great.

I’m very sad though that my music hasn’t been scrobbling since 11 April.
