Spotify launched in South Africa

Continuing the discussion from Spotify to launch in SA:

Spotify has launched in South Africa. Folks are struggling to sign up, but it went live yesterday afternoon and the embargo on its press release lifted at midnight.

They’ve kept it simple wit only a free and premium tier:

  • Spotify Free: Ad-supported. Shuffle play only. Limited skips.
  • Spotify Premium: R59.99 per month.

I’ve been a Google Play Music user for a couple of years but I thought I’d try out the free Spotify version and it’s very good. The playlists it generated are much more refined than what Google Play Music has. I also love that I can scrobble without having to make use of an extension.

Why is Spotify in the US priced at $9.99 for Premium and in the UK it’s £9.99?

Yet it’s R60 here, the conversion doesn’t add up, so what is being cut out that we aren’t privy to?

They probably know it won’t be competitive if it is priced double what you would pay for Play Music, for example.

Either that or they feel sorry for us poor sods.

I’m just waiting for Sony (or SK, or whoever) to get off their butts and get the PS4 app going…

^ This.

Also don’t only look at the spot conversion price, it’s useful to look at purchasing power parity to see how affordable something is relatively speaking.

Country Price PPP conversion International $
US $9.99 1.00 $9.99
UK £9.99 0.70 $14.27
ZA R59.99 5.88 $10.20

Here’s the World Bank’s latest PPP conversion factors:

Same here. It just appeared on my home screen by itself.

Checked when I got this message in my email notifications, and sure enough, there it was.

Thanks  I am quite impressed so far. I love the integration, and the fact it stops music in your games (at least P5 that I was playing when I tested it) when it’s playing.

I’m already paying for Google Music and Apple Music (long story as to why both), so while the news of Spotify coming to SA is great, I don’t think I’m going to jump onto the bandwagon just yet.

Still need to check out Spotify. Does it also have a family plan, or similar, like Play Music?

Play Music also works (most of the time) at my work, however Spotify is blocked (which is weird since it wasn’t even avaiable in SA until now). So Spotify needs to do things a lot better than Play Music for me to want to switch.

Mine kept playing when I started up Bloodborne.

I believe it does but not currently available.

It’s probably up to the game developer to implement properly

I am also testing the free version. Started with the horrible Simfy, had an issue (and got quite pleasant help from the developers) but decided to cancel (it was still R99 then) and went with Google Music when they launched locally. Have been a good while, my only gripe with GM is that it “mutes” the music (when I drive and listen on my car’s bluetooth) when messages come in or Waze chimes an instruction.

Quistion:

Whether the music variety is the same as the US or you have a case like Netflix where the US one is way way better than the SA one.

i saw a comparison that I think @Talentloos sent on WhatsApp that there’s only a 5mil difference between Google music and that of Spotify, and to be honest, I think that’s really small amount in the grand scheme. You really have to have something really obscure to probably not find it.

do you know how much 5 million is?
