What do you consider ‘success’ to imply or indicate?
Wealth?
Kind of career?
Asset(s) owned?
Goal(s) achievement?
IMO,
Completing something you’ve worked on over an extended period.
Being promoted to a higher ‘rank’ (job dependent/career dependent)
Admittedly, material things owned, perhaps due to hard labour,
as well, bank balance.
Very common, I know. But it’s all that comes to mind right now.
I decided to define success for myself, by my standards and no one else’s. I created some goals I wanted to work towards and set my life path to them. Two simple goals with a lot of scope:
Do everything different than my parents did
Be there for my kids at all costs
This lead to a long list of things I aimed at, not all that I want to share but here are a few: I have never and never will drink alcohol. I have never and will never will smoke. I have never and never will do drugs. I am monogamous to the day I die, married for 24 years so far. I have refused every job offer, every promotion that would lead to me not working from home. It means I make crap for a salary and am subject to the whims of people half my age but it means that I have been there every day when my kids get home, have helped them with homework/life, play games with them every day.
So you see, success is what YOU make it and no one else. One day, if you have the luxury of being able to look back as you die, you should try to have no regrets because only you can judge what you have done with your life. Nothing else matters.
That’s quite noble in itself. I honestly struggle with work-life balance though. With our first baby on the way in just over a month’s time, I need to readjust the way I think about work. I work on average 10 hours during the day and most weekdays from in the evenings. Over weekends I work on other work endeavours as well. My goals is to do all of this for another 2 years and sit back and reap the rewards by “retiring”, but still drawing a salary and other income from all the endeavours.
So, in a sense, my success will be defined by reaching the 2-year goal I set for myself.
your life is about to alter course.
Don’t worry, its all good though. My advice: become a motherfuckin zen master and remain chilled in all
situations. You are going to be taken to the limit.
*side note: your goals will still be achieved.
now to OP
Success is achieving goals. However big or small. Success is constant forward motion and never giving up.
