Tech Support Hotline

Not sure where else this would fit…

Good time for you and your loved ones to move to Signal

With the richest man in the world starts pushing this as well, I just hope it’s only to slap facebook in the face.

Troubling for those of us with work groups stuck on Whatsapp :frowning:

Its easy to say, “ok i am switching over to signal” but “normal” people don’t know this information, trying to get parents, uncles, aunts, businesses, and clients etc. To just switch over is nigh impossible

Its installed but almost no one I know uses it

You have until February 21st (iirc) before you’ll have to accept the new policy. Keep in mind that part of the WhatsApp acquisition was to not share the data with Facebook.

I know that feeling. Work can afford to get you a separate phone and SIM card. (easier said than done)

Anyone who really cares about keeping in contact with you will. It’s inconvenient at the best of times, but it’s better than giving away your privacy.

You’ll have to spread the word.

But hey, if you want to bend over for these tech assholes for a little convenience…

I’ve been toying with the idea of just closing my Facebook account anyway. Any idea what the impact of that will be on Whatsapp?

If you close your facebook, you won’t lose access to your WhatsApp, but since facebook already knows who you are, using WhatsApp under the upcoming policy will keep them more up to date on you.

Even if you close both accounts, with the amount of tracking they do on 3rd party sites, they still more or less know what you are up to.

I never had a facebook account, but from what I understand from reading that article, it sounds like it wont matter, in the end it is facebook as a company getting the data so don’t think having an account really matters

Sorry, new policy takes place Feb 8th… One month left…

if you think the data that Whatsapp is going to start gathering about you Facebook doesn’t already have, then you are naive. What going to happen is that people will accept the new policy and the data that Facebook already has of you will be gathered through Whatsapp. Also, I think if you want to keep your personal data secure and out of the hands of people like Facebook et al, then the best way is to stay off the internet.

Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon all have mountains and mountains of data on all people using their services. Whether we like it or not. The news is a bit overblown in my opinion and will be well forgotten in like 2 weeks from now, where everyone will still be using Whatsapp instead of Signal (which, by the way, also gathers data on you).

Exactly. There’s no stopping it. That doesn’t mean you need to go along with it. You can block facebook, GCP, AWS IP ranges using a pi-hole or something, and you’ll find how little of the internet works.

I’ll just leave this here

I got rid of my Facebook account about 4 or 5 years ago. My reason was purely because it turned onto an advertising platform and not social media. My friends were the ones spamming me with things I did not want to see. One in a hundred posts were actually something relevant to a friend. I dont miss ot at all.

Now that the article mention it, I remember opting out of the info sharing. Waiting on the account report to see what it wntails and what I actually share.

Any Mac experts around?

I assume it’s MacOS related, or it could be MS related. What happens is every now and then my MS Outlook will prompt (via notification) that my password is required. But clicking on the notification brings up the settings for said account but nowhere is there an option to input a password. This was all done when I set up the account. Nevertheless, Outlook and emails still function properly and have not experienced any issues, it’s just annoying.

Who’s your email provider? Is the password notification part of outlook, or is it OAuth (like a Google sign-in page, for example)?

Using an Office 365 subscription as far as I know, business provided. I set it up locally as an Exchange connection under “Interenet Accounts”. I’ll try take a screenshot of the notification when it pops again.

Or of anyone has a better suggestion for a wifi extender, please feel free to share

So, since I opted out of the data sharing (in 1969 apparently) does the new agreement change any of that?

This is on Whatsapp.

Well, this depends on what you want to do.

I for one don’t like wifi extenders too much I have always had clients have issues with the speed with these extenders. How far is the wifi router from the plug you want to install the extend? If you have a signal that is anything lower than -70 dBm you would start having speed issues when streaming with multiple clients using the extender( A app called Wifi Analyzer can show you the signal strength to help get the best spot)

I have never played around with the Netis but I have with the TP-Link and with these extenders, it depends on what signal quality it’s getting as in the end it just extends the signal it’s getting.

When it comes to Wi-Fi at homes I prefer using a Wi-Fi mesh or a type of AP. It can cost a bit more but the clients I installed these in for have never called me back for wifi issues.

I Like the Ubiquiti range of APs and when it comes to Wi-Fi mesh I would go for a TP-link or Asus mesh. But then it comes down to the first question what do you want to do with the device

It’s just going to be for basic wifi for our tenant, I too use the wifi analyzer app, and the place we though we will be putting the extender will be just under the green, however, there are some other spots, that may work better. I have used the netis a few times, and it works well enough, but I feel honestly like getting something different, something a bit “stronger” if that makes any sense.

I too would always rather go for a wired connection, but my father does not want to, so wifi extender it is.
