I suppose you still need a license for Windows nowadays?

Technically yes.

If you have a licensed copy of Windows 7 or 8 that hasn’t been upgraded to 10, you can still get the upgrade for free.

Sadly I don’t. I haven’t made use of Windows in over 5 years.

Wow, how can you work?

I use a MacBook, which comes with its own suite of applications and such. We use Office 365 for work, but I chose not to install that crap on my MacBook.

I am actually the only Mac user in our company afaik.

Are you looking at gaming, or…?

Yeah, I have been sticking to MacOS based games on my Steam but wanted to try them on Windows to see if performance would improve. I don’t have high expectations or expect the latest games or graphics. Just some simple games and more specifcally RPG’s like Path of Exile or maybe if it goes on special some times, Divinity Orginal Sin 2.

Also, not sure if I would need a x32 or x64 version?

Does Proton on Steam work on Mac?

Go x64 assuming your MacBook is from the past decade.

Not sure what you mean by this, link perhaps?

Proton is basically a fork of wine specifically for Steam/games. It isn’t an emulator, but it does let you run Windows only games on Linux.

Looks like it isn’t really supported on MacOS, but there are some build instructions for it on an older version’s README.md

Probably not worth the trouble, as last I read, MacOS doesn’t even support Vulkan.

If you do decide to dual boot, maybe try the latest Ubuntu Desktop, and install Steam on that. It will be simple to enable Proton from there, and you can check game compatibility at https://www.protondb.com/

@murfle I’m guessing @Beo plays steam games via normal steam client, because proton isn’t supported on macos. I wouldn’t say the target market cares enough to try wine either. And then there’s the Iris graphics… But it would probably steam stream pretty well, assuming you had a windows desktop to stream from.

May be worth a look, at least then I shouldn’t have to worry about Windows licensing.

You would be correct sir.

I wonder though, under these new environments (Windows or Linux), will performance be better than that of the native MacOS?

It is certainly possible. Depends on the game and the developer, plus you’d get a much larger library than being dependant on the developer providing a Mac port.

Just make sure you’ve gots everything important backed up before you start messing around with dual booting.

Windows and Steam installed successfully. Such a seamless process. Boot Camp did all the driver installation and everything.

Anyone have any experience with Backdrop CMS? Apparently it is a Drupal fork… I’m looking for a well maintained CMS that isn’t WordPress. Regular and fast security updates are a must.

Are gaming laptops worth their price and time?

I’ve had two before. They were useful for about a year after that, but they aged very badly, at the time. Many games went through a generational upgrade, so the hardware suddenly couldn’t play many new games. What games are you looking at, and what are you willing to spend? You are the only one can figure out if it’s worth the price.

Ag mostly just a pipedream I guess. If I had to get anything it would only be at the end of the year when bonuses roll around. Pure speculation and curiosity at this point.
