I keep getting that error

edit Never mind after the 5th restart it is working - must have been the latest windows update that fucked things over

I’m thankful the one pastel install I support moved to cloud based this year.

Check your computer running services from device manager. Pervasive is the engine (service) for Pastel to run its SQL backend.

Shoulld just be a matter of restarting the service, if not already running, otherwise kill the process and restart the service.

This may seem like a bit of a silly request, but I very much like to customise my workflows so here goes:

I have this screen

and I have this screen

So what my desire is, to have all (or at least the ones that I frequently use and work with) the Google Workspace icons or apps in one space. I know it sounds trivial and I can just go to Google and open that app menu, but as you can see, I like to set these kinda things up strategically and personally. Or even guide me to a single space (or a link) that has all the Google apps in one place.

Sidenote: I can’t figure out how to add links or shortcuts to the “new tab” view in Firefox.
EDIT: apart from visiting a site repeatedly in order for it to appear as frequently visited.

Thoughts and suggestions?

Doesn’t look like you can set it in Firefox yet, go back to chrome since you use google apps. You can customise the blank page in chrome at least  I swap between firefox and chrome for certain apps like this as google apps works better in chrome (for me at least).

Guys I’m looking for a 9 pin serial cable male to female…

Sound like the start of a murder mystery

What you’re looking for is a RS232 cable. Easy enough to make if you have the cable and ends.

Maybe I’m horribly wrong here, but I don’t think @Wyvern is a “if you have the cables and ends” sort of person. I think she’s more a “I’ll pay you money, you give me a cable…” person.

Best I can find from a known site - and this is despite my ongoing irritation with them - is this female-to-female cable from TakealongtimetodeliveraTV:

https://www.takealot.com/gizzu-9-pin-rs232-2m-cable-black/PLID49329913

Add this adapter/converter and it could work:

https://www.takealot.com/baobab-db9-male-to-male-serial-cable-gender-changer-coupler/PLID52853734

Both are in stock in Cape Town, so you could maybe arrange to do a local pickup on Tuesday if you order now.

Thanks guys

It depends - for this yea gimme the fecking cable and I will pay you for it - just about any amount.

I found this one - Get The UniQue 9 Pin Male To Female Serial Cable, - Today For R33 In South Africa!

But now its to far away aka my dad wants it yesterday not next week.

Apparently he uses the cable to connect the racing car dash to the laptop or the app he uses to record data, but over the weekend there was a hiccup the data was never sent to the dash so his dash kept switching off I think? Feck only knows the man is driving us nuts - I have spent the last 2 hours looking for the spare cable he is supposed to have here . . . Which after my search means it isnt here now. . . so it has to be either at the track or at the garage he works on the car. But now he wants a cable tomorrow and no amount of telling him its a public holiday is helping matters.

Communica Cape Town will have, but they’re only open on Tuesday again.

Netram in Century city might have, and looks like they’re open tomorrow, so give them a call.

Neotronics might have… don’t know how open they’ll be.

Micro robotics are closed, but you can also try them if you still need it on Tuesday. The Centurion branch is excellent.

Thanks everyone! I will give the father all his options and be thankful I am working tomorrow lol

Can someone give me a quick ELI5 on mouse sensitivity and DPI please?

I understand the basics - higher DPI number means the mouse is more sensitive and the pointer moves faster. But I’ve only recently found out what my mouse’s actual DPI values are and want to know which I should be using when.

The mouse DPI can be set to 1200 / 1600 / 2000 / 3200. I tend to leave it at 2000 DPI (or what I used to think of as Mouse Speed 3 before I found out what the actual DPI values are  ). So, my question really is what’s the advantage of adjusting the mouse sensitivity for gaming, and what setting goes with which games?

Surely using the mouse to try to slay zombies in Back 4 Blood isn’t the same as using it to finesse a long putt in 2K21 PGA Golf? I’m sure everyone will be different, but are there any general guidelines here?

Firstly - dad found the missing cables in the car. . . .

Secondly Im crap with DPI settings, I keep mine simple between 2000 and 4k max

I dont like it to fast, otherwise I lose the pointer in games Also I have found faster = me moving the mouse in shorter distances which I prefer

TL;DR Find a comfortable DPI setting for the mouse, and leave it there. I always recommend between 800 and 1600. Expanded on below

Mouse DPI is marketing gone wrong for gaming on PC. Nowadays it’s often much higher than the average user can use. As far as gaming is concerned, most games often an in-game mouse sensitivity setting. So it really doesn’t make sense to change your mouse on the fly for a game. Why bother. Set the game sensitivity per game, when you initially install the game. You probably have an idea if you prefer high, medium or low sensitivity. And no, you shouldn’t be changing it between things. That ruins your muscle memory for the feel of your particular mouse movement. Like I said, 800 to 1600 DPI is fine. The reason I don’t recommend higher is better, is because a higher DPI can pick up for jitter, from dirty surfaces. I don’t know if you eat over your mousepad, or maybe you have family members that keep knocking over cooldrinks on your mouse surface. And don’t tell me 2000 is so perfect, you can’t use 1600, and just raise windows mouse speed. Lastly, and very technically, mouse engines, can error out, at high DPI more easily, when moving fast, at which point they skip because they’re pulling too many G’s, so to speak. If you’re mouse has a high polling rate feature available to it. Use it. 1000Hz polling rate is noticeably better against the defacto 125Hz rate, when gaming.

Last thing I forgot, turn off mouse acceleration or as it’s called in windows setting, mouse point precision. It will throw off your aim. Yes you technically can adjust for no it. No, it will never be more consistent than a linear acceleration curve. It should be 1 to 1 for how you move your mouse.

All this talk of DPI made me wonder what my mouse max DPI actually is. This lead me to find out that there is a firmware update for my mouse that bumps it from 16k to 25k DPI. The G502 Hero by the way.

First thought was: Cool, free upgrade
Second thought was: WHY?!?

I game at 800DPI, never go higher. To see it in action though I bumped it to 25k and the pointer flew across 2 screens (a 1440 and a 1080) by moving the mouse about 2mm.

DPI is like the PMPO rating for hi-fi systems of yore. Just a “mine is better than yours” marketing number
