Nothing whatsoever actually Was really just a bit of a thought experiment and discussion. An “in the event of an OS drive crash, what would be the options?” open-ended sort of thing.
I have nothing mission critical on my PC that I don’t have stored offline - photos, official docs, etc. All the work related files, folders, notes and presentations are cloud stored - I do most of my prep work on the bigger screens on the desktop, but use the laptop at work, so OneDrive for the win. I even have copies of a lot of both work and personal files on GoogleDrive and DropBox too.
I personally have no issue reinstalling Windows if I needed to. In fact, I do it at least once a year on the desktop.
For those with SSD/HDD problems, I recommend Macrium Reflect for backups. There’s a free version. And um now I can’t remember the name of the utility that I use to monitor the drives. I will have to go check on my home machine. There’s a free version of that too. I think it may actually be CrystalDiskInfo that was mentioned earlier.
I had problems with my one SSD until the one day when it just completely failed. Luckily Wootware replaced it. Should have sent it back earlier really.
This may seem stupido as I have been struggling with my connection for the past hour and was just wondering, does fibre (or the routers) have an option to input a username and password like other mediums, or is that handled by the NTU?
The NTU is just the connection from the fiber to the home network. Thats why you would see a NTU and the router these days and not like before just the phone line to the router.
Was just not connecting. Getting a red light. Intially the connection felt slow so I rebooted everything then all of a sardine it no longer wanted to connect. After a out an hour of struggling it did. I didn’t have mobile data to check their Afrihost/Frogfoot page to see if they had any current issues.
I don’t have (nor can I afford) an inverter and don’t necessarily need one. One thing I am considering, and tell me if viable, is a 1.5 or 2kva UPS. At least to power the router, Xbox and TV. What is the power usage like in devices like that?
In my experience a UPS isn’t really meant to keep everything running, it’s just so it can give you time to “gracefully” shut down your devices, stopping hard drive damage and data loss.
I feel like the topic is around here somewhere, where i had to get all the details of what would be plugged into the ups, so i could work out their combined power draw, and then get a ups that would allow me to at least shut down my pc so it doesn’t get damaged
The batteries definitely need replacing. The batteries went very quickly though. And even initially the UPS didn’t keep the router and such up for long.
Like @TechThief said. It basically just gives you time to switch off whatever’s plugged into it.
Unfortunately, I don’t see the 5V/12V/12V model anymore, only the 5V/9V/12V. There are larger ones on sale there though. I specifically chose the 28000mwh battery version, because the larger the battery, the longer it takes to charge fully, And I was thinking of the worst case scenario, that we all experience with stage 43 fucking loadshedding, where you only have a gap of 2hours, to recharge. And at 28000, it already lasts 4 hours. Actually using 3 in the house, so all the switches don’t go down.
That said, i had one of the 3 go bad. So my success rate is only 2 of 3.
Also had 2 mecer UPS’. Not great, but they’re meant to give you enough time to shutdown, not power things forever.
